The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has signed the decree that gives the name of Félix Pons to one of the main access roads to Palma. The road will run from calle Puerto Rico, just before the Palau de Congressos, to Avinguda Gabriel Alomar.
This Wednesday, the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, signed the decree approving the dedication of one of the main roads in Ciutat de Palma to the illustrious Palma politician and former president of the Congress of Deputies, Félix Pons Irazazábal.
This is the section of the entrance to the city that stretches from calle Puerto Rico, just before the Palau de Congressos, to Avinguda Gabriel Alomar, a road that is currently called Avinguda de les Torres Llavaneres, and will be renamed “Avinguda de Félix Pons Irazazábal. Jurist and politician (1942-2010)”, which will connect with Avinguda Adolfo Suárez.
This recognition of the figure of Félix Pons is a personal commitment of the mayor, who has already informed the family of the decision. This was announced by Cort in a press release. In this way, Palma honours the figure of Félix Pons and the memory of a politician who was an example of dignity, coherence and honesty, giving his name to one of the main access roads to the city, where unique buildings such as the Palau de Congressos, the Gesa building, future headquarters of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as various facilities are located, according to the City Council.
It should be remembered that a commission of independent experts was set up to choose the street, made up of Pere Nicolau, Joan Huguet, Román Piña, Lluís Morell, Guillermo Reynés and Neus Cortés, and on behalf of the City Council, the City Chronicler, Bartomeu Bestard, whose aim was to designate a location that was in keeping with the figure of Félix Pons.
Félix Pons, Illustrious Son of Palma
A lawyer and law professor, Pons is considered one of the most important politicians of the Transition and of Balearic politics. He was President of the Congress of Deputies for three legislatures, between 1986 and 1995, during the governments of Felipe González, and Minister of Territorial Administration. Committed to the democratic principles that he always defended above ideologies, his presidency was recognised by all the parliamentary groups for his integrating nature and his contribution to the consolidation of democracy was highlighted.
Félix Pons, together with another Palma native, Antonio Maura (1853-1925), of whom he was a descendant, constitute two of the most relevant figures in Spanish politics. In this sense, the Mayor of Palma declared that “it is only right to recognise the figure of Félix Pons and honour the memory of a politician who was an example of dignity, coherence and honesty”.
