The Balearic Islands are attending ITB Berlin with the aim of positioning themselves as a sustainable and circular destination in the German market. The fair begins tomorrow, Tuesday 7 March, and runs until Thursday 9 March

From 7 to 9 March, the Balearic Islands will take part in the ITB tourism fair in Berlin, which returns in person after three years when it was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim will be to position the Balearic Islands as a sustainable and circular destination in the German market, as well as to highlight the islands’ leadership in the transition towards a new tourism model, the tourism model of the future.

To this end, the tourism offer of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera will be present at ITB at a stand measuring almost 600 m2, coordinated by the Regional Ministry of Economic Models, Tourism and Employment, through the Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB).

This is the same stand that was used for the first time at the last edition of Fitur and was recognised by the organisers as a “Sustainable Stand”. The design has been adapted to the new ITB space, but is still inspired by the Posidonia Oceanica, so characteristic of the Mediterranean, and with a firm commitment to sustainability, both in all its materials and in the construction process.

The Balearic Islands’ stand at ITB will have its own stand with the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, as well as various local councils and private co-exhibitors (Gallery Hotels, Roig Drive Mallorca, the Playa de Muro Hotel Association, Affilired, Ikos Porto Petro and Adramar incoming).

In order to enable the sector to hold business meetings at the fair in an organised manner, the AETIB has set up a table reservation system at the stand. This system has been previously communicated to the tourism companies so that they can use it to schedule their appointments.

Metaverse and presentations at the stand

The Balearic Islands’ stand at ITB will once again feature, as it did at Fitur, the first virtual world of the Balearic Islands within the Metaverse. This is a replica of the stand through which users will be able to enjoy an immersive experience while they take a brief tour of the tourist attractions of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The Metaverse will also showcase many of the initiatives being carried out by the Balearic Islands in the areas of sustainability and circularity and in line with the SDGs.

In terms of trade fair activities, various presentations will be held at the Balearic Islands stand. On Tuesday 7 March, at 10:30 a.m., the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera will present their main tourism innovations for the German market in 2023.

On the same Tuesday, at 12.30 p.m., the president of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, and the councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, Iago Negueruela, will take part, along with the director of the Impulsa Foundation, Toni Riera, in the presentation “Moving towards regenerative tourism: the case of the Balearic Islands”. The Balearic Islands will be presented as an example of transformation and improvement of the tourism model.

On Wednesday 8 March, the Balearic delegation to Berlin will hold various working meetings with the main tour operators in the German market, starting at 10:00 am.

These meetings will serve to learn first hand how the tourist season is presented for this market, as well as to convey the Balearic Islands’ commitment to a change of tourism model, a model based on sustainability and circularity. The meetings will be with tour operators such as FTI Touristik, alltours, Der Touristik, RTK and Schauisland.
