The Mallorcan Guillem March has drawn characters such as Batman, Superman, Catwoman, Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn and has created numerous covers, some also for Marvel. On the occasion of this week’s Còmic Nostrum 2022, in which he is taking part in some of the scheduled events, March talks to this magazine about a sector that is gaining visibility this week but is not usually so well known by the public. And he also previews two of the scheduled events that no comic fan should miss.
“Comics is like poetry, but without the prestige,” he jokes. “It’s a minority art form, because there are few adults who read comics enough to create a big industry. Something that does happen with cinema or video games”. According to March, who has worked for the superhero publishing house DC Comics since 2007, “in Mallorca there are a lot of cartoonists per square metre and a lot of talent, but it is difficult to make a living from comics at a local or national level. To do so, you have to work abroad, mainly in the two most powerful markets: The United States and France”.
Essential exhibitions
Precisely, the local author previews two essential exhibitions that can be seen in Palma as part of Còmic Nostrum 2022. The one that brings together more than 130 original pages by Joe Kubert (1926-2012) and the one that shows fans more than 60 pages of Blake and Mortimer, by the French cartoonist André Juillard, both in Casal Solleric. “Normally to see exhibitions of this level you have to go to the United States or France,” he points out.
On Friday, those attending the Còmic Nostrum will be able to see March drawing live as part of the show put on by Monstruas Impro. “As the previous talk is about a magazine with erotic content but treated in a positive and inclusive way, let’s see if anyone is up for being drawn without clothes or only with underwear”. On Saturday it will be the turn of a round table of self-publishers. “What really pays the mortgage are the superheroes, but when I want to bring out a project that doesn’t fit in with the commercial, I print it myself and distribute it in some shops in Palma”.
Guillem March urges the public interested in the world of comics to attend the Festival, which will be held from the 20th to the 23rd of October in Palma. “The two exhibitions I have talked about are extraordinary. It is much more impressive to see the original drawings, just as the artist did them, as well as having the chance to meet the authors and enjoy the fun part of the event”, he concludes.
