The first edition of the Mallorca Tanca el Cercle awards already has winners: Esporles, Sant Llorenç and Campos have been recognised by the Consell with these awards at a gala held in the cloister of San Buenaventura, in Llucmajor. The awards seek to encourage competition between councils to reach the recycling targets set by the 2030 agenda: to substantially reduce waste generation through policies of prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

The awards recognising the best municipalities in terms of waste management were as follows:

  • The municipality that generated the fewest tonnes of waste was Esporles, with a total of 51.08 kg of waste per inhabitant.
  • The municipality that collected the most waste by fractions was Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, with a total of 363.94 kg of selective collection (all fractions except rejects) per inhabitant.
  • Finally, the municipality that has improved the most in terms of collection compared to the previous year (2020-2021) is Campos, which has climbed 15 places in the ranking. In 2020 it was the 27th municipality and in 2021 it finished 12th with 32.14% of selective collection.

On the other hand, the Consell has awarded a special mention for the best initiative in waste policy to Santanyí. The proposal of its new waste management plan is an ambitious project that identifies very well the shortcomings and points to improve within the municipality and its waste flows by setting the objectives and clearly defining the actions to be carried out with each fraction to achieve them and verify compliance.
