There are 450 incidents caused by the storm of hurricane winds, rain and hail that has hit this Sunday especially Palma and Calvià, leaving chaos on its way through Mallorca. 210 incidents have been counted in Palma. At this moment it remains to restore the electricity supply to 1000 users in all the islands. Today the yellow warning is maintained in Mallorca and orange in Menorca for coastal warnings with waves of up to six meters.
In the streets of the towns and cities of Mallorca there are still numerous fallen trees and broken signs, among other elements of urban furniture such as containers, tables and chairs of the terraces, etc. after the chaos caused by the storm that swept the island yesterday, Sunday.
Among the most serious incidents caused by the storm that have affected people are those that have occurred in Calvià where a man who had gone kayaking around the Malgrats islands was reported missing. Salvamento Marítimo managed to locate him safe and sound, after searching for him by sea and air.
In addition, two women were injured: one, who was pregnant, had a sign fall on her and cut her leg. Another woman had to be helped after hurting her ankle in Cala Fornells and was evacuated by ambulance. Both are already in their homes, as reported by the Calvianer consistory. Finally, on the beach of Illetas, Maritime Rescue, Local Police and Firefighters had to help a father and his two children who could not get out of the water.
Chaos in the airports of the islands
At the airports, the adverse weather has caused not only a slowdown in approach operations but also flight diversions, specifically in 119 flights at the airport of Son Sant Joan, so many passengers have been affected. In fact, hundreds of people have spent the night at Palma airport.
In the Paseo Marítimo de Palma at least four palm trees fell at different points that have obstructed one of the traffic lanes. As a precaution against the risk of new incidents with the trees, the City Council of Palma had to close several public spaces, the most significant of which are the crosswalks of the Paseo de Sagrera, the Molinar and the Castell de Bellver. During the day today the City Council is working to restore normality.
In the Port of Palma a critical moment was experienced when a cruise ship was unmoored by the gale and collided with an oil tanker, although fortunately no injuries were reported. The Maritime Station number 1 was devastated when the windows were blown out by a gust of gale-force wind.
In Felanitx, a part of the wall of the Macarena bullring fell.
Still 10 teams are mobilized to restore electricity. It affects the towns of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Esporles, s’Arenal, Inca, Selva, Can Picafort and Calvià.
Return to normality
For today, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated alerts for rough seas in the south, the Serra de Tramuntana, north and northeast by waves ranging between two and four meters high. However, it is not ruled out occasional and scattered showers, which could occasionally be accompanied by storms.
