Carnival 2023 in Mallorca is here. The much-anticipated party of illusion, magic and color will be held from February 12th to 22nd on all islands. Sa Rua and Sa Rueta give way to the Fira del Ram in Holy Week. Big events that await us after the Sant Sebastià and Sant Antoni festivals so that the party does not decline
Mallorca Carnival is a colorful event full of energy and life that is eagerly awaited each year, with parades and shows before the start of Lent. A celebration that extends to all the villages on the island with costume parades, the largest of which takes place in Palma.
The Carnival party varies on the calendar each year based on Holy Week, as it is celebrated 40 days before Holy Thursday, which this year is April 6th. This 2023, therefore, Carnival begins on Thursday, February 12th with Sa Rueta and ends on February 22nd, known as Ash Wednesday. On Sunday 19th February Sa Rua will be held from 5 p.m. onwards.
Sa Rua: Sunday 19th February
Sa Rua will host the traditional parade with floats and troupes, which will begin at 5 pm at the junction of La Rambla and Calle Olmos, and will end at the junction of Avenida Jaime III and Paseo Mallorca. This year 6 floats and 26 Carnival troupes will fill the streets of Ciutat with illusion.
The floats and troupes will pass along the Rambla, Calle de la Riera, Calle Unión, Plaza Juan Carlos I and Avenida Jaime III. In addition, the gathering will take place from 4 p.m. onwards in Calle Baró de Pinopar, Avenida Alemania and Avenida Comte de Sallent.
In the Plaça Juan Carlos I there will be a stage with entertainment and a performance by the Marítim Party Band.
The jury will be located in the Plaça del Mercat and, while the parade is taking place, will be scoring the different elements that will decide the winners. Registration to take part in the Sa Rua competition is open until the 16th of February at the Citizen Participation department of Palma Town Hall.
Sa Rueta: Sunday 12th February in Palma
Sa Rueta took place on Sunday 12th February from 11 am to 2 pm with different activities in the centre of Palma

Celebrations of Carnival 2023 in the different municipalities of Mallorca
On the island, Carnival is popularly known as “els Darrers dies”, in reference to the days preceding the Christian Lent and its prohibitions. It is celebrated on February 18th and 19th. Sa Rueta was on Sunday, February 12th, and Sa Rua, February 19th, in Palma. In the villages of Mallorca, the “Dijous Gras” o “Dijous Llarder” is celebrated that lasts all weekend with concerts, dances, and parades of comparsas, which end in the traditional burial of the sardine.
Meanwhile, in Palma, the Ram Fair takes place. It’s an immense amusement park for the delight of young and old, which begins during Carnival and extends until the Easter weekend. More than 200 attractions, lottery stalls, and traditional stalls are located in Son Fusteret, on the outskirts of Palma. With the possibility of parking for over 2,000 cars, as well as the ease of reaching by public bus through number 10. Impossible to miss.
The City Council publishes the rules for participating in Sa Rua 2023
The area of Citizen Participation and Internal Government has published on the City Council’s website the rules for participating in Sa Rua 2023, which will be held in Palma on Sunday, February 19th at 5:00 p.m.
Citizens who wish to participate, either in the float category or in the parade category, can register by submitting the required documentation in the rules from February 6th to February 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Citizen Participation Department. There will be up to 2,600 euros in prizes, four prizes for floats and another four for the best parades.
The categories are the most elaborate float or parade, the most militant float or parade, the most original float or parade, and the most encouraging float or parade. Criteria such as the artistic quality of the decoration, the atmosphere, the animation, the incorporation of live music, originality, creativity, humor and criticism, among others, will be valued.
The work “Fiesta en Palma”, winner of the poster contest of “Sa Rua 2023”
A total of 36 proposals have been submitted, of which the work “Fiesta en Palma” by the artist Constanza Carolina Gatica Palomera has been chosen. The jury was formed by a representation of children of the Consell de la Infància of the city that, for the third consecutive year, have chosen by vote the image they liked the most. The winning work receives a prize of 400 euros. Constanza Carolina is twenty-two years old and lives in Palma. A lover of drawing, she is currently studying for a higher degree in design.
The jury has also chosen the poster that will illustrate “Sa Rueta” of Palma. A total of 5 proposals were submitted, of which the winner was the drawing “Sa Rueta 2023”, presented by the Espiral Association. The winner gets a set of books from the bookstore Drac Màgic.
