How are the Goya winners voted?
In 2023, the Film Academy is once again awarding the best acting and technical work of the audiovisual industry during the last season. Actors Clara Lago and Antonio de la Torre present the gala held at the Andalusia Auditorium in Seville. The Goya Awards recognise the work of directors, producers, scriptwriters, editors and other technical professionals, as well as that of the actors and actresses in their various categories. With a new feature: viewers can make an online betting pool with the films they think will win the statuettes. The person with the highest number of correct guesses will win an expenses-paid double invitation to next year’s gala. The 10 people who come closest will be able to go to see 10 different films with a companion in 2023.
Five nominees in all categories
A striking new feature of this year’s edition is the fact that there are five nominees in all categories of the Goya Awards 2023. In previous editions, nominations were limited to four candidates in most cases. For the specific award of Best Film there were already five nominees as there are now.
This change matches the standard of other major international film awards, such as the Oscars. In addition, it helps to give visibility to a greater number of Spanish film works and professionals. It is well known that the Goya Awards are a showcase of high media impact.
The favourite films at the Goya Awards
The film up for the most awards is Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s As Bestas, with 17 nominations in total at this year’s Goya Awards. It is closely followed by Modelo 77, by Alberto Rodríguez, with 16. Next in line are three films directed by women: Alcarràs, by Carla Simón (11 nominations); Cinco lobitos, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (11 nominations); and La maternal, by Pilar Palomero (3 nominations).
Last year, the Mallorcan filmmaker Daniel Monzón won five Goya Awards with his film “Las leyes de la frontera”.
As bestas (17 nominations)
Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s latest film is the other favourite to win this category and compete with Alcarràs for the award. It has triumphed among critics and audiences and has rescued the case of the Santaolla Crime, on which this painful and thrilling story is based. It is the film with the most nominations (17) and is expected to be the big winner of the night.
Model 77 (16 nominations)
Alberto Rodríguez, the director of La isla mínima, returns with a thriller loaded with a powerful social and political message. This thrilling story centres on a notorious prison in Barcelona in the 1970s. After Franco’s death, a series of changes took place in Spain that were not transferred to the penitentiaries. The main characters are Manuel (Miguel Herrán) and Pino (Javier Gutiérrez), two prisoners who spent years behind bars waiting for an amnesty.
Alcarràs (11 nominations)
This is one of the favourites at this year’s Goya Awards. Carla Simón’s film won the Golden Bear at last year’s Berlinale. It tells the story of a farming family that begins to fragment during the last days of summer in the face of the horizon of change that awaits them. Simón could win the Best Film statuette after being left out of the Oscar competition. The film was selected to represent Spain as Best Foreign Language Film.
Cinco lobitos (11 nominations)
Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s debut feature has stood out. It conquered the Malaga Festival at its presentation. Later, audiences in Spanish cinemas were hooked by its moving story about care and motherhood. The performances of Laia Costa, Susi Sánchez and Ramón Barea stand out. All three are favourites in their respective categories.
