The bus discount in Mallorca is now a reality. The intercity bus network of the island joins the rebate of the Central Government. After the announcement in recent days by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, together with the President of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, of a 100% discount on train and metro services in Mallorca, it is now the turn of intercity buses. But in the case of buses, only 50% of the cost of this service will be discounted. It should be noted that the discount on the Palma metro, train and intercity bus services in Mallorca will only apply to users of the intermodal card. This discount on bus, metro and train tickets is scheduled to begin on 1 September for a period of three months. It should be noted that the rest of the islands will also benefit from this subsidy for collective land transport. Intercity buses on Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera will get a 70% discount thanks to the collaboration of the Councils of each of the islands.
How is the discount on the metro, train and bus in Mallorca applied?
In order to benefit from this discount, you must be in possession of the Intermodal Card. In this way, users of this card will be able to access the train and metro free of charge, and in the case of journeys by bus or with a bus connection, only the fare that corresponds to the discount applied to the journey will be applied.
From 1 September, all fares will be halved. For subsequent journeys, the price of each journey will be reduced by the points accumulated on the intermodal card. In other words, a user who travels 40 times in the same calendar month by intercity bus will be able to benefit from a 72% discount on the fares he or she is currently paying with the “Tarja Intermodal” (the Intermodal Card of Mallorca).
Does the discount apply to the Palma EMT (city buses)?
As far as the Palma EMT is concerned, the discount will be applicable when there is a transfer between TIB and EMT (or vice versa), applying the same fare as the intercity bus. In this way, the free connection with Palma’s urban bus network will be maintained. To make these journeys, the Intermodal Card must be used. With the Palma Citizen’s Card, the discounts of this subsidy do not apply. Furthermore, travelling on the Palma-UIB Metro line will cost the same as travelling on the EMT bus, unlike the free travel that the Intermodal Card will offer for 3 months.
Who will get the discount on the metro, train and bus in Mallorca?
Public transport in Mallorca has been trying to modernise for years with the birth of the Intermodal Card thanks to the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca (CTM). This card makes it possible to travel on interurban transport and Palma’s EMT with a single fare per journey. There are currently some 270,000 active user cards, so it is expected that these 270,000 users will benefit from this transport subsidy in Mallorca, as only users of the Intermodal Card will be entitled to the discount. This measure aims to boost the use of public transport in Mallorca and increase the number of users of the Intermodal Card.
