“I like to sew since I was born. I come from Leeuwarden, a small town in Holland. There is no fashion there, but my mother had a sewing machine. Since I was bored I began to use it, to do things, and just then the MTV television program appears. Video clips awakened my passion for fashion. That changed my life.”
Isabel Gomila almost needs no introduction. She is one of the most powerful signings of the new edition of the fashion design program “Sewing Masters”, to which she returns after being a finalist and one of the most charismatic contestants of the second edition of the program in 2019.
“In my town people wore jeans and Swedish. I was always very extravagant, wearing laminated pants at 18. And then I signed up for a sewing course. My colleagues made napkins and I made baroque dresses. You are from another planet, the teachers told me”, says Gomila, who in two weeks opens her first store in Mallorca.
Since she walked out of the TV show three years ago, her career as her designer has imploded at a dizzying pace. Her own signature, oriented towards party and nightwear, evolved towards exclusive and author kimonos.
After the opening of its physical store in Madrid, it will open its own space in Palma on April 2, at number 3 Calle Pes del Formatge, in the old quarter, the nerve center of the city and a meeting point for artists, for the proximity of clothing stores and art galleries. “The store is called ‘Meet me by Isabel Gomila. The idea is to create a concept for other designers”, she explains.
From Itziar Castro to Chanel Terrero: the kimono as a star garment
The actresses Itiziar Castro and Vanesa Romero, the member of the Master Chef jury, Samantha Vallejo-Nágera, or the Eurovision winner, Chanel Terrero, are, among others, some of the celebrities who bet and repeat on the designer’s garments.
Gomila describes that her star garment is comfortable and versatile, for men and women. One size fits all and made with a variety of fabrics, the kimono is not out of place as an evening dress, it can be worn at a wedding and also at home, in a more intimate setting or even worn over a bikini.
“During the pandemic I was bored. And since I have a workshop under my house, I started to see what I could do. I collect many fabrics. I had like 20 boxes full. And I decided to make kimonos to try, as entertainment. I uploaded the first one to my social networks and sold it. The kimono suits everyone, as it comes to life in each person”, Gomila describes the beginning of her entrepreneurship.
After positioning her kimonos as an emblem by sending garments to different parts of the world and opening her point of sale at the 15 Segundos Store signature center in Madrid, Gomila is committed to vindicating her origins in Mallorca.
“I had had the idea of carrying out a project in Palma for a long time, which I am now making a reality by opening my own space, very large where I have a workshop, a shop and the possibility of representing more firms, to bring even more life to this neighborhood so wonderful”.
