The Directorate General of Public Health, in collaboration with the Civil Guard, seized 20 tonnes of spoiled seafood and fish during an inspection carried out last April at a distribution company located in Palma. The products were not fit for human consumption and, according to the investigation, a significant portion had expired best-before dates, with some batches dating back as far as 2019. The company faces a €90,000 fine.
During the operation, Public Health technicians, supported by officers from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA), located a stored batch that also included food items that had broken the cold chain and had later been refrozen, a procedure expressly prohibited due to the health risks it entails.
In light of these irregularities, Public Health ordered the immediate intervention and immobilisation of all the products, preventing them from reaching the market and therefore consumers. At the same time, the Directorate General opened an administrative sanctioning procedure for two very serious violations of health and consumer protection regulations.
The authorities remind the public that these inspections are carried out regularly with the aim of ensuring food safety in the Balearic Islands and preventing risks to the population.
