The coastal cleaning service of the Balearic Islands removed 7,988 kilos of waste from the sea and the coastline during September 2025. The operation, coordinated by PortsIB and the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle, resulted in a daily average of 266 kilos of marine litter.
Mallorca, the island with the most waste collected
Mallorca accounted for more than half of the total, with 4,387 kilos, followed by Formentera (1,536 kg), Menorca (1,120 kg) and Eivissa (943 kg).
In total, 23 boats took part in the campaign: 15 beach boats, which operate in shallow areas, and 8 coastal boats, capable of working up to five miles offshore. During September, the beach boats collected 4,408 kilos and the coastal boats 3,579 kilos.
Plastic, the main type of waste
Plastic was the most common material, representing 35.29% of the total. It was followed by marine vegetation (22.17%) and other assorted materials (20.67%).
In addition, special operations were carried out to remove bulky objects on all the islands.
- In Mallorca, fuel residues, vegetation, a log and a drifting boat were removed.
- In Menorca, plastics, ropes and a dead moray eel were collected.
- In Eivissa, another drifting boat and plant remains were removed.
- In Formentera, two drifting boats and a log were taken out.
Collaboration and special operations
During the month, four alerts were attended to — three in collaboration with Maritime Rescue and 112, and one at the request of institutions or private individuals.
The 2025 coastal cleaning campaign concluded on 30 September after five months of continuous activity. However, PortsIB is keeping two vessels active in the port of Vila (Eivissa) to remove the waste accumulated after the heavy rains at the end of the month.
