The Inca Regional Hospital has launched an innovative project to improve the quality of life of oncology patients. From now on, people receiving chemotherapy in the day hospital have access to virtual reality headsets that help them relax and make the waiting time more bearable.

This initiative has been made possible thanks to the collaboration agreement with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Balearic Islands, which has donated the devices.

The headsets project videos of around 30 minutes in length with varied themes, designed to induce calm and reduce anxiety. Their main aim is to lessen the emotional impact of the illness through relaxation techniques.

This way, patients can enjoy an immersive environment that helps them disconnect while receiving treatment.

Proven benefits for oncology patients

The use of virtual reality during chemotherapy has shown very positive results:

  • 84% reduction in perceived pain.

  • 26% decrease in pre-treatment anxiety.

  • 88% of patients feel that time passes more quickly.

Additionally, the system also benefits relatives and carers, who share a more relaxed and humane environment in the hospital.

A step further in healthcare humanisation

The initiative is part of the Humanisation Plan of the Inca Regional Hospital. The goal is clear: to improve the emotional well-being of patients, relatives and carers during such a delicate process as oncology treatment, according to the Balearic Government.
