The Hospital Universitari Son Espases has marked a milestone in the public healthcare of the Balearic Islands by performing the first robotic thoracic surgery procedures. Thanks to the Da Vinci XI robotic platform, the centre can address complex thoracic conditions using minimally invasive procedures. This results in faster recovery, less pain and more satisfactory clinical outcomes for patients.

Robotic thoracic surgery combines conventional video-assisted thoracoscopic techniques with high-precision technology. The Da Vinci XI system features four articulated arms that precisely replicate the surgeon’s movements from a console. It offers immersive three-dimensional vision and a 360-degree range of motion. This technology enables procedures such as pulmonary lobectomies, thymectomies, or mediastinal tumour resections with superior precision and without the need for large incisions, significantly reducing surgical trauma.

Multiple benefits of robotic thoracic surgery for patients

The benefits of robotic thoracic surgery for patients are numerous: less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, lower complication rates, better preservation of lung function, and quicker return to daily life. Additionally, the oncological effectiveness of this technique is comparable, and even superior, to open surgery in early-stage lung cancer.

The programme was authorised by the management of Son Espases during the first quarter of this year. Doctors Ángel Francisco Carvajal Carrasco and Orlando Gigirey completed their specialised training in Amsterdam, obtaining official certification as console surgeon and assistant, respectively.
