From July to October, CaixaForum Palma is offering a journey back to the Ice Age to discover the most iconic animal of that time, the mammoth, of which a well-preserved fossil specimen can be contemplated. The fossilised skeleton of a Siberian mammoth measuring 6 metres long and 3.5 metres high is the star of the exhibition, in which visitors will be able to delve into the ice age to get a closer look at the lifestyle and habitat of these gigantic animals.

Through historical and scientific information about this animal, which appeared on Earth five million years ago and became extinct just over four millennia ago, the viewer will learn how and where mammoths lived, the different species that existed, how they interacted with humans and what order of animals these fantastic mammals belonged to, of which today only one living direct relative remains: the elephant.

By approaching mammoths, the exhibition encourages reflection on evolution, the cycles of the planet and the relevance of the scientific work that lies behind the findings of the remains of these animals, in order to better understand how they became extinct and the world they left behind. What was the fur of these animals like? How did the climate and also the diet and dentition of mammoths change over the course of their evolution? Did they become extinct as a result of climate change or were they exterminated by humans? These and other questions will be answered in this exhibition.

As usual, CaixaForum Palma will offer guided and dynamic visits to the exhibition, as well as other complementary activities to enrich both the visitors’ knowledge and experience.
