The A media lumbre exhibition (Half-Light) in Mallorca will bring together 49 artists in a collective project exploring the dialogue between contemporary art and traditional crafts. Part of Biennal B, the exhibition will open between 22 and 23 July at Sa Refinadora (The Refinery) in Marratxí, Casal Solleric (Solleric Manor House) and Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani (Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art), where it will remain on display until 18 October.

The exhibition, curated by Blanca de la Torre, director of the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM) (Valencian Institute of Modern Art), arrives on the island after premiering at the Valencian museum last February. It brings together artworks and artistic practices that celebrate materials and knowledge traditionally associated with craftsmanship, including ceramics, clay, wool, textiles, embroidery and natural fibres, while also incorporating voice and oral tradition as vehicles for preserving memory.
Biennal B brings A media lumbre to Mallorca
The arrival of A media lumbre forms part of Biennal B, a collaborative initiative involving several cultural institutions that will travel across Valencia, Mallorca, Aragon and Catalonia through four exhibitions sharing the same conceptual framework while adapting to each territory.
During the presentation of the exhibition, the Vice-President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, said: “Biennal B is a strategic commitment by the Consell de Mallorca to promote contemporary culture rooted in the local area and capable of reaching municipalities across the island.” She added that A media lumbre “was born in a major urban museum such as IVAM and is reunited here in Mallorca with the land, craftsmanship and the memory held in people’s hands.”
The councillor also highlighted that the Mallorcan edition is particularly significant thanks to the participation of artists from the Balearic Islands and others based in Mallorca, whose works engage with materials, techniques and landscapes characteristic of the Mediterranean.
Three venues for an exhibition with its own identity
The A media lumbre exhibition in Mallorca will be spread across Es Baluard, Casal Solleric and Sa Refinadora, with each venue presenting a distinct selection of works.
At Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani, Lucía Loren presents a series of site-specific interventions created especially for the museum’s terraces. She is joined by Ricardo Calero, Andrea Canepa, Tonina Crespí, Julie C. Fortier, Teresa Lanceta, Teresa Matas, Lara Ordóñez, Núria Riaza, Belén Rodríguez and Cecilia Vicuña.
Casal Solleric features the work of 30 artists, including Pilar Albarracín, Carolina Caycedo, Teresa Lanceta, Glenda León, Albert Pinya, Alex Reynolds, Isabel Servera and Concha Ybarra, alongside other Spanish and international artists.
Meanwhile, Sa Refinadora in Marratxí hosts an installation by Teresa Matas created from textile materials. Through the act of sewing, the artist reflects on memory, pain and vulnerability from both a poetic and material perspective.
A project committed to sustainability
In addition to its journey through the four participating territories, A media lumbre embraces sustainability by using natural, non-polluting materials, reusing exhibition elements and reducing the international transport of artworks.
The project is accompanied by a publication documenting the initiative and featuring texts by María Montesino and María Sánchez.
The opening will begin on Wednesday 22 July at 7.00 pm at Sa Refinadora. A day later, the exhibition will open at Casal Solleric at 7.30 pm and at Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani at 8.30 pm. The A media lumbre exhibition in Mallorca will remain open until 18 October.
