The University Hospital Son Espases in Palma has performed a total of 48 organ transplants so far in 2024, thanks to the altruism of 23 donors and their families. By islands, there were 16 organ donors in Mallorca, 4 in Menorca, and 3 donors in Ibiza and Formentera, as reported by the Ministry of Health on the occasion of World Organ and Tissue Donor Day.

Of the 23 organ donors in the Balearic Islands, 6 were in asystole, a technique that allows organ donation in cardiopulmonary arrest implemented in 2016 in the public hospitals of the islands, and 16 in brain death. At Son Espases, 38 kidneys and 10 livers were transplanted. Additionally, 3 multi-tissue donations were received (2 at Can Misses and 1 at Son Espases) corresponding to bone, tendon, and corneas, and there were 23 exclusive cornea donors at the University Hospital Son Llàtzer.

The rate of 41.17 donors per million inhabitants in 2023

In regards to 2023, the public hospitals of the islands transplanted 132 organs from 49 donors, reaching a rate of 41.17 donors per million inhabitants. By islands, there were 43 organ donors in Mallorca, 3 in Eivissa and Formentera, and 3 in Menorca.

In the summary of last year’s activity, the Autonomous Coordination of Transplants of the Balearic Islands (CATIB) reports that 19 out of 49 donors (approximately 39%) donated in asystole, while the remaining 30 donors were in brain death (approximately 61%).

At Son Espases, 68 kidney transplants were performed, including 5 from living donors, the highest number recorded since the program began. Additionally, 16 liver transplants were carried out, the highest number of liver transplants since the program started in 2021. In total, 74 transplants were performed on patients from Mallorca, 5 in Eivissa, and 5 in Menorca.
