Some thirty bookshops are taking part this year in Sant Jordi 2023, the ‘Dia del LLibre’, which is being held on Sunday 23rd April in Palma and the Part Forana of Mallorca

The great festival of literature and roses will finally be celebrated this year 2023 without any restrictions, after three years marked by the coronavirus pandemic.

29 bookshops in Palma will take to the streets of Palma on Sunday to present the latest novelties in literature and bring reading to the general public. A task that they are making easier on Sant Jordi, as all the books will have a ten percent discount.

This year, the Dia del Llibre has a new feature: due to the works in Plaça d’Espanya, the space has been relocated and the bookshops have moved to La Rambla, where the route begins. The route will continue along Via Roma, Blanquerna, Sant Miquel, Plaça Major, Carrer del Marqués del Palmer and Plaça de Cort.

With this novelty, books and roses can be mixed on the same route, as the flower shops on La Rambla will be open on Sunday 23 April while the ‘Dia del Llibre’ is being celebrated.

The 29 bookshops of the Gremi de llibreters de Mallorca participating this year are: Rata Corner, Agapea, Curolletes, El Corte Inglés, Es Raconet, Caramulls, Ínsula Literària, Lila i els Contes, Llibreria Campus, Llibres Ramon Llull, La Salina, Embat Llibres, Come In Palma, Finis Africae, Llibres Colom, La Biblioteca de Babel, Gotham, Lluna, Abacus, Drac Màgic, Quart Creixent, Univers del Còmic, Baobab, Quars, Casa del Libro, Fnac, Literanta and La Librera del Savoy.

Activities Sant Jordi 2023: Book Day

The Biblioteca de Cultura Artesana (BCA) will set up a space in the garden of the Misericordia Cultural Centre on the morning of Saturday 22 April to develop its programme. The library’s books will go outside with the Bibliomobile, with exhibition and loan of new books. A mobile stand will be set up where a selection of books for adults and children will be on display. At the same time, there will be a decorated photo-booth for readers to take a photograph of themselves with their favourite book.

  • At 11 a.m., the garden of the Misericordia Cultural Centre will host the workshop ‘La leyenda de Sant Jordi’ (The Legend of Saint George), run by Robotix Baleares, in which children will be invited to build a story with LEGO pieces.
  • At 12 noon, Giuliana La Spada will lead an activity for all audiences that aims to bring Shakespeare’s poetry and theatre closer to the public through dance and movement.

Mallorca Literary Foundation

For its part, the Mallorca Literaria Foundation has organised two activities on Saturday the 22nd.

  • At 11 am, the Museu de la Paraula – Casa Rafel Ginard will host ‘Badant enfora, contes de prop’, an invitation to break down the limits of the imagination, to repaint the world with colours, to spread one’s wings and fly away.
  • At 12 noon, in the Sineu library, the workshop ‘Cantan y cuentan’ (They sing and tell) will be held. The actress and musician Maria Adrover will be in charge of telling the little ones some of the most special legends of Mallorca, as well as all the secrets about the characters that are the protagonists.

The rest of the activities taking place all over Mallorca can be consulted on the Cultura Mallorca website. The Mallorca Library Network has also prepared a special programme, which includes workshops and activities in almost all the libraries of the island’s municipalities.
