The Cançons de la Mediterrània 2023 Festival will be on the 6th, 7th, 8th, 20th, 21st and 22nd of July at Ses Voltes. A select group of artists who represent the musical, rhythmic and linguistic diversity characterises this cultural event. This Mediterranean festival is organised by the Culture Department of Palma Town Hall. It’s the longest-running of all those held during the summer months in Mallorca. All the concerts will start at 9:30 pm.
Programme of Cançons de la Mediterrània
This year’s Cançons de la Mediterrània 2023 has had the artistic advice of David Ibáñez. He is the director of the Auditori and Palau de Congressos de Girona and artistic director of the Fira Mediterrània de Manresa between 2012 and 2018.
- On 6th of July, we will delve into the art of aita and chikhates with the Moroccan Widad Mjama and the Tunisian Khalil Epi.
- On the 7th of July, will be with the great Valencian cantaor Pep Gimeno ‘Botifarra’, who will present his latest work, ‘Ja ve l’aire’.
- The 8th of July will coincide with another emblematic moment of the festival, with the performances of the Mallorcan Maria Jaume and her soft and intimate pop, and the tradition of popular music from Murcia seen from a contemporary perspective, by Maestro Espada.
- On the 20th of July, spectators will be delighted with the vocal polyphonies of popular song from the neighbouring island of Corsica, with ‘L’Alba’.
- On 21 July, the festival will take a journey into the depths of the Greek soul with Yiannis Dionysios and his tribute to the great authors of the Rebetiko, the music of the Athenian suburbs.
- Finally, on 22 July, the Franco-Moroccan Bab L’Bluz will offer a repertoire centred on the fusion of blues and Gnawa music. They will share the bill with Marala, a benchmark in Catalan music, who will present their new album, ‘Jota de morir’.
Cançons de la Mediterrània was born in 1984
Since then, it has become fully consolidated as a point of reference for the great diversity of music and languages that converge in the territories of the Mediterranean coast, to show their different cultural, social and political realities.
For this reason, one of the criteria that mark the festival’s programme is the plurality of origins of the groups selected for each edition.
In addition to the cultural diversity to be shown during the festival, a balance is also sought between different formal approaches, either with more orthodox proposals (related to the local popular music and culture of the area of origin), or with proposals that are committed to an avant-garde and contemporary approach.
Visits to the Museu Marítim
At the same time, this year the Museu Marítim de Mallorca has joined the great Ses Voltes festival and has organised guided tours of its recently inaugurated collaboration with the mural artist SOMA and his particular tribute to the island’s seafaring collectives.
These visits will take place on the 6th, 7th, 20th and 21st of July, coinciding with the Thursday and Friday concerts, at 8 pm. Family visits are also planned for every Saturday in July at 7 pm.
