In August 2018 Mercadona launched its new “Ready to Eat” section. Since that date, the company has continued to develop this space with quality and varied preparations for their “Bosses” which is how Mercadona calls the customer internally. The assortment is made up of 50 dishes that are served in packaging made with natural materials and can be found in more than 750 supermarkets, 22 in the Balearic Islands.
At Mercadona, by observation, asking or because the customers and workers suggested so, it was detected that the “Bosses” asked for dishes with fresh products and prepared for those moments that they did not feel like cooking. Thus, in 2017 work began on “Ready to Eat” and a Co-innovation Center was built in Burjassot (Valencia), where work sessions were held with around 800 clients, cooked with them and a multitude of traditional recipes were tested. With their suggestions, ideas and needs, the initial assortment of 35 dishes was developed, that continues being improved.
Currently, and as a result of continuous listening to its customers, “Ready to Eat” already has approximately 50 dishes on which Mercadona continues to work to guarantee different solutions through laboratories and always taking into account the local assortment according to the autonomous community. The section promotes sustainability and the principles of the circular economy with cardboard packaging and cellulose pulp extracted from sugar cane, the placement of recycling bins and reusable cutlery.
Selection of Christmas dishes
Mercadona has several options for the Christmas holidays that can be ordered until December 28 in the 22 supermarkets that have this section. The tray with 18 cold canapés made up of different mixtures such as salmon and dill or cheese and figs stands out. As main dishes, the boneless free-range chicken stuffed with shallots, truffle, foie, plums, brandy and bacon stands out; half roast suckling pig; shoulder of suckling lamb marinated with salt, rosemary, thyme and lemon; or the cheeks stewed with red wine sauce. All served with a garnish of baked potatoes and candied onions.
