The president of the Government, Margalida Prohens, is today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where she has defended the candidacy of Menorca Talayotic as World Heritage. It has been in the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO
Menorca Talayotic is already a World Heritage Site. Today took place the plenary session of the member states of the UNESCO Heritage Committee in which the vote and the inscription of Menorca Talayotic as a candidate to be declared World Heritage took place. The president of the Government of Menorca, Margalida Prohens, the permanent delegate ambassador to UNESCO, José Manuel Rodríguez, and the president of the Consell de Menorca, Adolfo Vilafranca, have intervened to defend and support the designation.
After the session, the president, along with the delegation of the Consell Insular de Menorca and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, will travel to the Embassy of Spain in Riyadh to attend the dinner organized by the Ambassador of Spain in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jorge Hevia.
Talayotic Menorca is now a World Heritage Site
The UNESCO Committee has voted today the inclusion of Talayotic Menorca in the list of World Heritage Sites. This is the culmination of 13 years of work and the worldwide recognition of the exceptional nature of its monuments. We are talking about the Naveta des Tudons or the prehistoric ‘taules’, as well as the ‘navetes d’enterrament’ or the circular houses of Menorcan Talayotic architecture.
Talayotic Menorca, a World Heritage Site, is thus part of the list of 1,121 cultural and natural wonders chosen by ICOMOS, an advisory body to UNESCO. It is expected that the prestigious title will give international visibility to the island, favoring cultural tourism and access to economic funds, both for scientific research and for the preservation of the sites.
