The refuges network of the Consell de Mallorca has recorded a new visitor record in 2024, reaching 40,240 overnight stays, which represents an increase of 18.8% compared to the previous year. This rise in visitor numbers confirms the growing popularity of these natural spaces among hikers, especially during the peak demand periods of autumn and spring.
The refuges of the Consell de Mallorca, located on public estates on the island, have a total of 332 available beds and are primarily filled during the months with the highest number of hikers, such as October and May. During these months, there were 10,305 overnight stays. Furthermore, around 55% of visitors come from outside Spain, with notable numbers of tourists from Germany and France.
The second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports, Pedro Bestard, highlighted the environmentally conscious profile of the visitors and stressed the value of these refuges as a base for hiking the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, also managed by the Consell.
Refuge occupancy data for the Consell de Mallorca in 2024:
- Tossals Verds: 8,119 overnight stays
- So n’Amer: 7,795 overnight stays
- Muleta: 6,051 overnight stays
- Can Boi: 6,678 overnight stays
- Pont Romà: 5,464 overnight stays
- Galatzó: 6,133 overnight stays
This increase in occupancy is also reflected in the investment allocated to these spaces. For 2025, the budget of the Department of the Environment will increase to €2,520,000, with the goal of improving and preserving these refuges, which are highly valued by both locals and visitors.
More than 2,400 schoolchildren enjoy the educational experience
In 2024, a total of 2,437 students from schools in Mallorca had the opportunity to stay overnight in the refuges of the Consell as part of educational programmes. During the months of March, April, and May, 1,832 children under 16 participated in these activities, while in July, 130 children enjoyed summer camps. Additionally, since the start of the 2024-2025 school year, another 475 students have had the chance to experience this through initiatives such as “Una nit a la Serra” or “Nit d’estrelles”.
