Majorcan hoteliers celebrate that this Easter they will reach 85% occupancy. A higher category and specifically in five-star hotels, is where the highest occupancies are registered, above 2019 and even with a rise in prices.

“We consolidate the firm commitment of the hotel sector in Mallorca for the reactivation of tourism. A good example of this is that, despite the situation derived from the geopolitical situation, the galloping increase in prices and its impact on operating costs, the estimates that we have been formulating for weeks in relation to the level of openings forecast for this month of April they are ratified and even quintuples that registered in 2021, achieving a rate of 85% compared to 17%, ”says the president of the FEHM, María Frontera.

The sample carried out within the data monitoring system records, since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, a certain slowdown in reserves, without being significant. They are appreciated more in the German client that, together with the British and the national, are the main issuing markets for this Easter.

“For the summer months, there is a trend based on a return to advance bookings, as was the case in the pre-pandemic years, but at a lower rate. Even so, taking into account the new habits of consumers caused by uncertainty, high occupancies are expected as a result of the advance reservations already registered plus the sum of the last minute reservations that will occur unless there are new scenarios that reduce the demand”.

Hotel prices are maintained

In this sense, FEHM highlights the commitment to quality and maintenance of hotel prices, “an indication that the destination is strengthened thanks to the work and investments of recent years and the solvency shown by Mallorca in times of crisis. There is no evidence of a generalized drop in prices”.

Another trend to take into account is that, the higher the category and specifically in the five-star hotels, it is where the highest occupancies are registered, above 2019 and even with a rise in prices. “In this luxury segment there has been no slowdown in bookings and demand continues to be strong,” added Frontera.

The tourism sector, the one that hires the most

The data on unemployment and social security affiliation made public earlier this week “ratify the commitment of hoteliers as a lever sector in the creation and maintenance of employment in the Balearic Islands”, the president of the employers’ association has influenced.

In terms of business profitability, the prospects for employment and reactivation of tourist activity are positive, although it cannot be overlooked that the increase in inflation (close to 10 points and double that of other neighboring countries) and the rise in costs, will harm the sector.

“The rise in costs and the lack of raw materials hinder and distance the prospects of business profitability that we had seen in other times. It is evident that the situation has a great impact on the business sector and the consequences will be observed throughout the year. The rules of the game have changed and we must continue to be vigilant and agile in decision-making to take advantage of the best opportunities that the market offers us,” said Frontera.
