Mascaró assured that one of the challenges facing the force in the coming years is the need to increase material and personal resources in order to work on the model of proximity that citizens expect
Guillem Mascaró was sworn in yesterday afternoon as head of the local police force in a ceremony that took place in the plenary hall of the Town Hall and was attended by the mayor, Jaime Martínez, as president, as well as members of the municipal corporation, civil and military commanders and a representation of the main Balearic institutions.
After the mayor’s speech, who recalled that he has in his hands “the great responsibility of leading the process of transformation of the Local Police, a challenge that is as attractive as it is exciting, and at the same time demanding and complicated”, the new chief of the Palma Local Police gave a speech in which he listed the challenges that the force will have to face in the coming years. Among these, he stressed the need to provide more material and personal resources to work on the model of community policing that citizens expect. “The citizens of Palma must be sure that their police force and the community policing model it represents will always be there when they need it. We must be visible and accessible”, he added.
For his part, Martínez valued Mascaró’s experience and trajectory positively in this regard: “His knowledge and involvement will be at the service of a police model that is committed to proximity, strongly linked to the reality of the streets, squares and neighbourhoods of Palma, each with its specific problems. A participatory model, where dialogue with social and sectoral partners is especially important, which will allow us to get to know the city’s needs first hand and tackle the effects generated by incivility and the lack of compliance with civic ordinances”.
The councillor for Citizen Safety, Miquel Busquets, also wished to highlight the career of the new head of the Palma Local Police: “All of us who know Guillem Mascaró are fully aware of his great professionalism, his tireless work for the benefit of Cort and the proximity he has always shown to his colleagues, always taking their opinions and suggestions into account”.
Guillem Mascaró concluded his speech with a quote from the founder of the London Metropolitan Police: “You cannot be effective without the trust of the citizens, and we have to earn it day by day”.
After the protocolary act, the Mayor and the Chief of the Local Police reviewed a unit of the Local Police in the Plaza de Santa Eulària.
