Black Friday arrives this Friday, 28 November, bringing with it a wave of discounts flooding websites, social media and sales platforms. Most purchases are made online, an environment where deceptive practices increase at this time of year. For this reason, the Direcció General de Prestacions, Farmàcia i Consum warns that being informed is the best protection.

Tricks that may deceive consumers
At this time of year, some companies use less transparent strategies. Among the most common are:
-
Raising prices days beforehand to simulate discounts.
-
Adding hidden costs just before payment.
-
Using unrealistic countdown timers.
-
Displaying false scarcity warnings or “last units”.
-
Comparing prices with amounts that were never actually applied.
Consum recommends being wary of messages that generate artificial pressure or urgency.
Keys to safe online shopping
Shopping online safely is possible if some basic guidelines are followed:
-
Verify the seller’s identity and contact details.
-
Check reviews and confirm their reputation.
-
Use secure payment methods, such as cards or platforms with refund options.
-
Ensure the website has an encrypted connection (https) and recognised trust seals.
-
Review the original price, VAT and shipping costs.
-
Save the invoice and order confirmation.
In addition, consumers have 14 days to withdraw from the purchase without penalty.
Guarantees remain valid during sales periods
Sales do not affect consumer rights. New products come with a three-year guarantee, and digital goods with two years. Consum recommends keeping the receipt and checking the shop’s returns policy.
A more sustainable Black Friday
Consum also encourages consumers to consider the environmental and social impact of each purchase. Choosing sustainable products, recyclable materials and responsible packaging helps reduce ecological footprint. Supporting local businesses also strengthens the proximity economy in the Balearic Islands.
