The City Council has approved the return to the non-bonified measure in the plenary yesterday Thursday. The councilor of Mobility, Antoni Deudero, has defended that they are more in favor of applying bonuses for specific groups than to maintain the universal free service so the EMT bus will no longer be free from January 2024
From next year, the EMT city bus will again be paid in Palma. This was approved yesterday Thursday by the full City Council, with the votes in favor of the PP and Vox. The councilor of Mobility, Antoni Deudero, has defended it, explaining that they are more in favor of subsidizing those who need it than maintaining the universal gratuity of the service.
Deudero wanted to specify that getting on a bus is not free, but is subsidized. It is a service that has a cost, but now it is not paid by the users, but by a state subsidy, explained the councilor.
While waiting to know if the central government will finally maintain these subsidies, the councilor of Mobility believes that the system that existed must be recovered, i.e., only subsidize those who need it most.
Vox has shown its support for this decision, and has argued that this one hundred percent free service is a high cost for the consistory. The opposition has criticized the PP’s decision and regrets that there is no continuity in the promotion of public transport.
Thus, on January 1st, the City Council will eliminate the free service and apply bonuses for specific groups. A decision that has taken many commuters by surprise: “This will make people resort to their private cars and will be adding traffic jams”.
