The Palma City Council has acquired the former Metropolitan cinema and two adjoining premises for a total of 3,642,615 euros. The purchase will improve public services in the Pere Garau neighbourhood, the most densely populated area of the city, with over 28,000 residents.

The acquisition of the former Metropolitan cinema responds to a long-standing demand from local residents, who have been requesting improved infrastructure for a growing population for years. The building will be used for new municipal facilities, the relocation of services currently housed in rented premises, and the creation of a new basic health unit of 800 square metres to enhance healthcare services in the area.

Given the shortage of approximately 4,500 parking spaces in the neighbourhood, the City Council also plans to build a car park to ease pressure on street parking.

Additionally, relocating the community centre, the Encarnación Viñas library, and the Citizen Services Office (OAC) will result in an annual saving of nearly 65,000 euros by reducing rental expenses.

The council has pledged to consider creating a municipal nursery school to increase the availability of places for children aged 0 to 3, addressing a key local demand. With a total area of nearly 3,500 square metres and potential construction of up to six storeys, the new facility will centralise public services, enhancing their efficiency and accessibility for Pere Garau residents, according to Palma City Council officials.
