The consecration of Rafael Nadal as the best tennis player in history after winning his 21st Grand Slam title last Sunday prompted a collection of signatures with the aim of having the Mallorca airport bear his name. The petition published on the Change.org portal by Victor Bonnin and Sebastián Muntaner requests the modification. “Rafael Nadal is without a doubt the best tennis player in history and surely the best ambassador that the island of Mallorca has.

That is why we started this collection of signatures to ask the Government of Spain, AENA and the Balearic Government to do everything in their power to name the airport of Mallorca, Mallorca Airport – Rafa Nadal”, says the publication.

Armengol considers the initiative positive

The president of the Govern, Francina Armengol, has considered this Wednesday “positive” the initiative to collect signatures to put the name of Rafa Nadal at Palma airport, although she has commented that “it is a decision that Aena must take”, published Europa Press. This is how Armengol expressed himself when asked about this issue during a public act in Palma.

“Obviously Rafael Nadal is a great international ambassador for our islands, that is beyond doubt and more so in recent days,” he said. For her part, the president of the PP of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, has conveyed the support of the PP to the initiative to name Palma airport after Rafa Nadal.

Through social networks, Prohens has opted to make “that clamor” a reality and, therefore, has assured that they expect the Government to initiate “the corresponding procedures”.

In addition, the spokeswoman for the municipal group of Citizens (Cs) in the Palma City Council, Eva Pomar, has asked the local government to study making a statue in the city. “We know that Nadal is from Manacor and we do not intend to take away that pride from the people of Manacor, but we do want him to be recognized as has already been done in other cities such as Madrid”.
