The Government’s Directorate General for Trade advises those who want to take advantage of the special Black Friday discount period to shop, to choose small and medium-sized businesses in the Balearic Islands. Consumer Affairs recalls that:

  • Traders take advantage of these initiatives to remove stock and, therefore, not to waste merchandise.
  • Discounts are easy to check on the physical labelling.
  • Buying from small and medium-sized businesses helps the local economy, job creation and the continuity of commercial establishments. It is money that stays here and, in many cases, not only pays the retailer, but ultimately local producers.
  • It is more sustainable and reduces the carbon footprint associated with international shipping.
  • Proximity trade promotes the revitalisation of our towns and our urban environments and contributes to making neighbourhoods and towns.

According to the vice-president and councillor for Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Juan Pedro Yllanes, “it is time to stand up to the big multinationals in online commerce and I encourage shopkeepers, consumers and all of us together to demand a local Black Friday”.

Black Friday route in Playa de Palma

On the other hand, the Playa de Palma Traders’ Association has launched a pilot project to highlight the non-seasonal nature of small and medium-sized businesses in the area on the occasion of Black Friday. It is a Black Friday Route with the participation of eleven shops in Playa de Palma that will offer a free gift for every purchase made in each establishment that makes up the route, which will be open all weekend.
