The pandemic has prompted a change in behavior in travelers, who are increasingly looking for spaces in the open air and in contact with nature to enjoy their holidays. Thanks to this change in trend, not only agrotourism, rural hotels and campsites have experienced an increase in reservations, but also the nautical sector has benefited. Since 2019, nautical tourism to Spanish destinations has grown by 48% according to a report by Click & Boat and Nautal, and the Balearic Islands has established itself as the favorite destination among national and international visitors during the summer of 2021.
In this order, Menorca, Ibiza and Mallorca concentrate the majority of Spanish nautical tourists and, to a lesser extent, Barcelona and Costa Blanca. If we talk about international tourists, it is the British and Germans who choose the Balearic Islands as their favorite destination to go sailing.
International traveler preferences
While visitors from the United Kingdom opt for Ibiza and other towns such as Mallorca, Marbella, Menorca and Barcelona, those traveling from Germany prefer Mallorca and its coves, although Croatia remains their first option.
For their part, the French and Italians, who this season have prioritized domestic destinations, decide on Ibiza, Barcelona, Menorca and Mallorca and Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca respectively when they leave their borders.
Click&Boat and Nautal’s analysis of the Spanish market reveals a growing trend in international demand, which has doubled last year’s figures to 65%, 12% more than in 2019.
