The Governing Board today approved the comprehensive reform project for Plaza de España, which has been budgeted at 3,058,501 euros. The works, which will last approximately 16 months, will replace the 8,100 square meters of the current pavement with a new, more resistant one made of concrete and fiber tiles.

The mayor of Palma, José Hila, the deputy mayor for Infrastructure and Accessibility, Angélica Pastor, the head of the Infrastructure department, Urbano Sánchez, and the engineer who drew up the project, Francisco Caldés, have explained the details of this project, which is now processing begins.

For the mayor, with this action “we respond and solve historical problems with a project that will allow us to act in the entire square and improve a nerve center of Palma”.

Scheduling

The forecast is that the work will start with the renovation of the pipes in Caputxins, Bastió d’en Sanoguera and Obispo Perelló streets. Subsequently, sections of the square will be occupied with the aim of minimizing inconvenience both in shops and restaurants in the area and in pedestrians. The project contemplates maintaining access to the Mercado del Olivar from Plaza de España.

Details

Once initially approved by the Governing Board, a 15-day exposure period is now open from the time it is published in the BOIB so that allegations can be submitted. Afterwards, the bidding for the works will be removed.

The project plans to execute the following reforms:

-Renewal of all the 80x60x12 tiles: they will be replaced by a new pavement with a high-resistance gray fiberglass concrete slab. The new tiles have received the approval of the historic center commission and stand out for their durability and resistance.

-Repair of the fountain that surrounds the statue of King Jaume (demolition and new construction following the current model to correct the sinking that it currently presents).

-Separation of rainwater and new network of drinking water and sewage. Currently the rainwater collection network at this point in Palma is made up of sinks and the project plans to reinforce the current line of sinks and expand the collection area.

-Renewal of all the urban furniture in the square: different elements of urban furniture were renewed, such as benches and others.
