The traditional Mallorca jazz festival will hold its XIV edition from November 6 to 28. Artists and ensembles such as María del Mar Bonet, Charles Lloyd and Power UP Orchester, among other artists, will perform in the renovated Son Amar in Palmanyola.
The festival, which has invited the legendary double bass player Ron Carter and Bebo Valdés together with his son Chucho in previous editions, opens with the presentation of María del Mar Bonet, and will pay tribute to important filmmakers who have promoted popular music of the 20th century with their films.
On November 6, the singer, with more than 50 years of experience, will take the stage with a surprising Big Band of 17 musicians led by Toni Cuenca, who will go through her usual repertoire. The Mediterranean has always been the point of reference in her artistic and personal life, considering it her source of inspiration. She has toured the world with her music in her language, collaborating with dozens of different artists and styles.
On his side, Charles Lloyd, one of the most original and creative saxophonists of the last decades, returns to the ring at the age of 83. He will perform on November 28 at 8:00 p.m. for the first time in Mallorca leading his new quartet made up of the best jazz musicians of the new generation.
As part of its tour of Spain, the Power Up Orchestra will perform its repertoire of jazz, funk and Latin rhythms on November 27 at 9:00 p.m., in addition to a tribute to the world of anime and video games.
The warmth of the room, close and friendly, will allow attendees to enjoy a dinner or a drink while delighting with the artists. In addition, throughout the festival, talented Mallorcan musicians will offer free lectures and master classes.
“This year, after a difficult context marked by the pandemic, the main jazz festival in our community is reinventing itself to continue presenting international quality programming”, said Roberto Menéndez, director of the Jazz Voyeur Festival.
A tribute to 20th century cinema
In this edition, the festival has decided to pay tribute to outstanding filmmakers of the 20th century who have shot films related to musical genres. For this reason, “El exilio de Gardel”, by Fernando Solanas, will be screened with music by the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla; the documentary “What Happened, Miss Simone” by Liz Garbus, which chronicles the life of the brilliant artist and her rights activism, and “Arrows Into Infinity”, by Jeffery Morse, about the life of Charles Lloyd.
Each screening, with free admission, will take place in the Sala Catalina Valls of the Palma Town Hall, the first three Tuesdays in November, in the original language and with subtitles. All the information about the concerts and the price of the tickets can be obtained at this link.
