The Balearic Islands have now set the ten Sundays and public holidays on which shops will be allowed to open in 2027. The authorised dates are spread between January and December, with four days concentrated between late November and Christmas. Local councils will also be able to replace two of these dates with local holidays.
The Inter-Island Trade Commission unanimously approved the calendar following an agreement between the Balearic Government, organisations representing small and large retailers, trade unions and representatives of island and local authorities.
Shops open on public holidays in 2027: the ten dates in the Balearic Islands
Those wanting to know which Sundays shops will be open in 2027 will have ten authorised trading days in the Balearic Islands. The list includes Sundays and several public holidays:
- 3 January: Sunday before Three Kings’ Day.
- 17 January: Sunday.
- 1 March: Monday public holiday, Dia de les Illes Balears (Balearic Islands Day).
- 25 March: Maundy Thursday.
- 2 May: Sunday.
- 1 November: Monday public holiday, All Saints’ Day.
- 28 November: Sunday after Black Friday.
- 6 December: Monday public holiday, Constitution Day.
- 12 December: Sunday.
- 19 December: Sunday.
The calendar includes four authorised opening days between 28 November and 19 December, coinciding with one of the busiest retail periods of the year due to Christmas shopping.
26 December is not included among the public holidays on which shops can open in 2027. The Inter-Island Trade Commission decided to exclude this date because the Segona Festa de Nadal (Second Christmas Day) is a long-established traditional celebration in the Balearic Islands.
Local councils will be able to change two dates
The dates will not necessarily be the same in every municipality. Local councils will be able to replace up to two of the ten authorised Sundays and public holidays with local holidays.
17 January and 1 March received the most support as options for these substitutions. Each municipality will therefore be able to partially adapt the authorised opening days to its local calendar.
The agreement was reached at a meeting chaired by the Regional Minister for Business, the Self-Employed and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, accompanied by the Director-General for Business, the Self-Employed and Trade, Maria Antònia Sansó.
Representatives of AFEDECO, PIMECO, ASCOME, PIMEF, PIME Formentera and ANGED also took part in the meeting, along with UGT, the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera, the Directorate-General for Consumer Affairs and the Federació d’Entitats Locals de les Illes Balears (FELIB, Federation of Local Authorities of the Balearic Islands).
