The future Parc de la Música in Palma (Palma Music Park) will cover more than 19,000 square metres in Nou Llevant and its main feature will be an open-air amphitheatre with capacity for around 700 spectators. The project will also include green spaces and walking areas, sports and children’s areas, a large LED screen and the possibility of building an underground car park.
The new park will be linked to the future Caixa de la Música (Music Centre), home of the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears, and both spaces will form part of the Palma Culture and Innovation Bay, which is being developed mainly in Nou Llevant. The amphitheatre will expand Palma’s open-air music offering and host concerts and other cultural activities throughout the year.
What Palma’s Parc de la Música will be like
The project envisages an open public space with native vegetation and different areas for leisure, sport, culture and community gatherings in Palma.
The main planned features include:
- A stage and seating area with approximately 680 seats.
- An LED screen measuring 19.2 by 6.72 metres.
- Green spaces, gardens and areas for walking and relaxing.
- A café, bar, terrace and toilets.
- A children’s playground.
- A calisthenics area and exercise space.
- A climbing area.
- Table tennis tables and pétanque courts.
- A water feature.
The new park in Nou Llevant will therefore combine cultural uses with facilities designed for residents’ everyday use. The proposal also includes the possibility of creating an underground car park with around 285 spaces per level, which could serve the entire area and operate as a park-and-ride facility for the city.
Open-air concerts next to the Caixa de la Música
The amphitheatre will host open-air concerts in Palma and other cultural activities, complementing the facilities planned for the Caixa de la Música.
The future home of the Simfònica will include, among other spaces, a main auditorium for 750 people and a chamber hall for another 100. The combination of the two facilities will allow programmes of different formats and sizes to be staged both indoors and outdoors.
The Parc de la Música forms part of the Palma Culture and Innovation Bay, the innovation district being developed mainly in Nou Llevant, with culture, innovation, the blue economy and sustainability among its key areas.
Antonio Obrador donates the Parc de la Música project to Palma
Palma City Council has received the architectural and landscaping project for the park free of charge. It was developed by Estudio Antonio Obrador from a vision initially conceived together with Pablo Mielgo. Mayor Jaime Martínez Llabrés and architect Antonio Obrador signed the agreement on Tuesday through which the studio is donating the project to the municipality.
Martínez thanked the studio for the donation and said the project would help create “a new landmark space” for both Nou Llevant and Palma as a whole. The mayor highlighted that the combination of the Parc de la Música and the Caixa de la Música would “turn this area into a new meeting place for residents while also bringing music and culture closer to everyone”.
Martínez also placed the project within the city’s strategy to expand and diversify Palma’s cultural offering and increase its green spaces. In this regard, he once again thanked Estudio Antonio Obrador for “its generosity and commitment to the city” in donating a proposal that, he said, would help create “more culture, more green spaces and meeting places, and greater urban quality“.
