The summer season is presented with 85,000 rental cars in the Balearic Islands, which is between 4,000 and 5,000 more than in 2022, according to the Association of Rental Vehicles of the Balearic Islands (Aevab)

The president of Aevab, Ramón Reus, speaking to Europa Press, said that, until 1 June, rentacar had rented 70 percent of the fleet of vehicles it has on the islands for this summer, while the remaining 30 percent are at a standstill. In any case, according to Reus, it is expected that 100 percent of the rentacar vehicles on the archipelago will be rented as of 1 July.

On the other hand, in relation to rental vehicles that are not taxed in the Balearic Islands, the president of Aevab regretted that “the situation remains the same as last year, with companies that are taxed where they register the vehicles”. A fact that, he said, “is allowed” because “this is a free market” but, however, has qualified Reus, “should not be so. The best thing would be for road taxes to be paid in the Balearic Islands, if you drive in this autonomous region.

In this sense, he said he was “in favour of limiting the entry of vehicles into the islands, as long as it is done well, without harming companies that do it well”. “This is a free market and everyone can come”, said Reus, but he stressed that “as long as they do it well, without generating a bad image that then affects everyone”.

Uber in Mallorca

Finally, and in relation to the presence of Uber in Mallorca, which began operating last Thursday in Palma, Calvià, Andratx and Llucmajor, for groups of up to six people, the president of the Aevab has said “if the courts have said that the VTC can work on the island we must try between all that everything works well so that everyone can do their job”.
