The Balearic Islands’ water reserves are at 62 percent of their capacity<\/strong>. The Regional Ministry of the Environment will meet with the Balearic town councils to decide on possible water restrictions this summer. In order to deal with the great human pressure that the territory is expected to suffer in the coming months<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the next few days, the Regional Ministry of the Environment plans to bring together representatives of the local councils of the islands to discuss possible water restrictions this summer.<\/strong> The councillor for the Environment, Miquel Mir, has made it clear that it is possible that restrictions may have to be applied during the tourist season<\/a><\/strong>. Although the latest data show that the Balearic Islands are in a slightly better situation than last year, “it would be irresponsible to be overconfident and not adopt preventive measures that would allow us to face the great human pressure that the territory is expected to suffer over the coming months with a minimum of guarantees”, he assures.<\/p>\n

In view of the forecast of insufficient rainfall, the Directorate General of Water Resources is planning to meet with the town councils once again. A first meeting with the municipalities of the archipelago took place at the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

Accordingly to the latest figures, Art\u00e0, Ibiza, Manacor-Felanitx, Migjorn and El Pla are in drought pre-alert status<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last April<\/strong> was marked by a lack of rainfall. Sixteen litres per square metre were collected, when historically the figure reached was 40 litres.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a result, if the situation remains as it is now and water reserves do not increase, some municipalities will have to apply restrictions<\/strong>, Mir assured.<\/p>\n

Also, the Regional Ministry of the Environment is also concerned about losses in the drinking water network.
