<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Aula del Mar in Palma hosts a large exhibition on the Mediterranean corridor for the protection of cetaceans. The exhibition is published by the University of Valencia with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The exhibition, at Carrer de Francesc Femenias, 1 (Portitxol), can be visited until 30 September. It shows the history of the creation of this marine protected area, the species that live in it, the studies that are being carried out by the UV and the threats to the cetaceans that live there, mainly fishing interactions and maritime traffic.<\/p>\n
The Corridor is a continuous strip of maritime waters under Spanish sovereignty with an estimated surface area of 46,385.70 km\u00b2 and a width of 85 km. It runs along the Balearic, Valencian and Catalan coasts. It was in 2019 that it was added to the list of Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) of the Barcelona Convention.<\/p>\n
The University of Valencia has chosen the Aula de la Mar for this exhibition because it is a reference centre for environmental education in the Balearic Islands. It receives an average of 2,700 visitors a year, most of them students. It is a space open to everyone that disseminates information and offers its use to anyone who wants to organise activities related to the environment in general and to the sea and the coast in particular.<\/p>\n
The Corridor is an area of great importance for the second largest animal on the planet, the fin whale. This is a whale of more than 20 metres in length. A great diversity of other cetaceans live and feed in this area, such as the sperm whale, the bottlenose dolphin, the striped dolphin, the common dolphin and deep-diving species.<\/p>\n
