A few days after the opening of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival<\/a>, the actress, filmmaker and director of the festival, Sandra Lipski, highlights the leap in quality that Balearic cinema has made in recent years with various productions.<\/p>\n

Born in Germany, Lipski came to Mallorca at the age of nine. At 14 she acted in a series that was filmed on the island and she loved that world. She then decided to study film and acting in the United States. “The cinema is an adventure, an opportunity, a trip, it allows us to discover new places, it brings new perspectives”, she considers.<\/p>\n

The increase in Mallorcan films at the festival has grown since the fifth edition. At present, which runs from October 27 to November 2, 29 films by local filmmakers will be screened, such as \u201cSonic Fantasy\u201d, a documentary about singer Michael Jackson, by Marcos Cabot\u00e1, and \u201cUlisses\u201d, by director Joan Bover . For her part, the director Marga Meli\u00e1, director of “Bittersweet Days”, the first feature film conceived by a Mallorcan, presents “Dona”, a film that thematizes gender violence.<\/p>\n

What are the characteristics of the Balearic films that the festival presents?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is no single gender. Comedies, musicals, dramas are produced. The level improved a lot and we give it international visibility, the possibility of them participating in other festivals because spectators come from many countries and links are generated.<\/p>\n

What are the criteria for a film to enter the festival?<\/strong>
\nThe criteria are broad. For this edition we have received 1,200 screenings and we selected 139. The goal is that each film reflects, in some way, our motto: unite cultures, unite people.<\/p>\n

Does a cinephile or more general public attend?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The public that goes loves culture, they are curious, they like what is different. It is an event for everyone because there is variety. The festival is a very good opportunity to see independent productions that do not reach the big theaters.<\/p>\n

Do you think that the cinema has an educational function?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course. The cinema makes you think, it mobilizes. It questions the certainties. Maybe you are not interested in dance, but you decide to watch a dance documentary and it fascinates you.
