Last November, the Balearic Islands\u00a0registered the fateful death toll of\u00a0400 due to COVID-19, ten months\u00a0after a February 7 in which the first\u00a0case of the archipelago and the second\u00a0in Spain was admitted to Son\u00a0Espases: an English father, resident\u00a0in Marratx\u00ed and that he had just\u00a0come from France, a synecdoche of\u00a0what was already happening in the\u00a0world and of the contagion power\u00a0of the virus. Here, in the streets, it\u00a0was hardly given importance.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

On March 11, the WHO declares\u00a0the global pandemic for COVID-19<\/strong>. The next day, with about 30 cases\u00a0detected on the islands, the first\u00a0death from COVID occurs in\u00a0 Mallorca,\u00a0a 59-year-old woman with other\u00a0associated diseases. That same day,\u00a0the WHO reports that Europe has\u00a0become the \u2018capital\u2019 of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Everything rushes. The contagion\u00a0capacity of the stealthy SARS-CoV-2\u00a0is brutal. After almost 4,000 infections\u00a0and 90 deaths, the President\u00a0of the Government announces the\u00a0State of Alarm<\/strong> for March 14, which\u00a0would be extended until June\u00a020: 99 days of one of the strictest\u00a0lockdowns on the planet. The whole\u00a0Spain is paralyzed, the agendas\u00a0of the country are erased. Activity\u00a0plummets. Thousands of ERTEs<\/strong> are\u00a0processed daily at the beginning\u00a0of April.<\/p>\n

The days before and after the\u00a0declaration took place the toilet\u00a0paper days: the images of thousands\u00a0of people stockpiling rolls of\u00a0paper and overflowing carts until the\u00a0supermarkets were emptied starred\u00a0the news programs all over Spain.\u00a0In the Balearic Islands -as in other\u00a0places- the ghost of the insular shortage\u00a0jumps. The situation borders on\u00a0uncontrolled panic.<\/p>\n

At the end of March, the US, with a\u00a0denialist Trump, collects the highest\u00a0number of infections in the world\u00a0and in May, America rises as the\u00a0global epicenter of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The subsequent de-escalation<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013during May and June\u2013 would lead\u00a0to the second wave<\/strong> in an unusual\u00a0summer of beaches without tourists,\u00a0thousands of workers in ERTE,\u00a0company closures and other factors\u00a0of a galloping crisis that places the\u00a0Balearic Islands in the community\u00a0hardest hit by the economic crash.<\/p>\n

In the middle of August the second\u00a0wave begins. More contagious,\u00a0but less deadly. And with that, new\u00a0lockdowns, now partially. Palma borders\u00a0Son Gotleu, Can Capes, Soledat\u00a0Nord, part of Son Canals and Arquitecte\u00a0Bennassar.<\/p>\n

The regional Government negotiates\u00a0with the central Government\u00a0to establish a policy of safe sanitary\u00a0corridors between the islands and\u00a0the countries that emit tourism to try\u00a0to save part of the season, but the\u00a0proposal came to nothing.<\/p>\n

On October 7, the President of the\u00a0Government, Pedro\u00a0 S\u00e1nchez, presents\u00a0 the \u201cRecovery, Transformation\u00a0and Resilience Plan for the Spanish\u00a0Economy\u201d, a gigantic EU multi-million\u00a0dollar investment project that\u00a0attributes 140,000 million euros\u00a0to Spain in two phases: the first,\u00a0between 2021 and 2023, it will be\u00a072,000 million.<\/p>\n

On October 28, Spain is in extreme\u00a0risk and continues throughout\u00a0November.<\/p>\n

On November 9, pharmaceutical\u00a0company Pfizer and its partner BioNTech\u00a0announce their vaccine<\/strong>. There is a\u00a0momentary euphoria that makes stocks\u00a0rise for the first time in a long time.\u00a0Once the spigot is open, a veritable explosion\u00a0of advertisements for vaccines\u00a0against the virus ensues: 48 laboratories\u00a0are also in the clinical phase with\u00a0human tests, of these, 11 are in phase\u00a03 prior to commercialization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
