From 12th August, the sale, supply or provision of energy drinks to minors is prohibited in Mallorca and throughout the Balearic Islands. The new regulations subject these drinks to the same restrictions on sales to minors as alcohol and provide for fines ranging from \u20ac6,001 to \u20ac60,000 for breaches of the ban.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Minors can no longer buy energy drinks in Mallorca or elsewhere in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>. The Decree-Law on urgent public health protection measures approved by the Balearic Government comes into force this Wednesday, 12th August, following its publication in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB).<\/p>\n

The new regulations expressly prohibit the sale, supply or provision of energy drinks to anyone under the age of 18<\/strong> throughout the Balearic Islands.<\/p>\n

The measure also requires supermarkets, large retailers, small shops and other points of sale to adapt their procedures to check customers’ ages when necessary.<\/p>\n

How old do you have to be to buy energy drinks in the Balearic Islands?<\/h2>\n

With the new regulations now in force, customers must be at least 18 years old to buy energy drinks in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ban is not limited to supermarkets or large chains. It applies to the sale, supply or provision of these products to minors throughout the autonomous community.<\/p>\n

Energy drinks are therefore now subject to restrictions on sales to minors similar to those already applied to alcohol and tobacco.<\/p>\n

What is considered an energy drink?<\/h2>\n

The ban does not depend on a particular brand, but on the characteristics of the drink.<\/p>\n

Under the regulations, energy drinks are defined as non-alcoholic beverages containing a high level of caffeine, specifically 15 milligrams or more per 100 millilitres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These products also commonly contain sugar and other stimulants such as taurine, guarana or glucuronolactone.<\/p>\n

Whether a particular drink is covered by the ban will therefore depend on its composition and, in particular, its caffeine content.<\/p>\n

Can a minor buy an energy drink with their parents’ permission?<\/h2>\n

The regulations prohibit the sale, supply or provision of energy drinks to minors<\/strong>, meaning retailers cannot sell these products directly to anyone under the age of 18.<\/p>\n

The aim of the measure is to restrict children’s and teenagers’ access to drinks whose high concentrations of caffeine and other stimulants are a cause for concern among health authorities.<\/p>\n

Fines of up to \u20ac60,000 for selling energy drinks to minors<\/h2>\n

Breaching the ban on selling, supplying or providing energy drinks to minors is considered a serious offence<\/strong> under Balearic legislation on drug dependency and other addictions.<\/p>\n

The penalties range from \u20ac6,001 to \u20ac60,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Retailers will have to adapt their sales and age-verification procedures to ensure compliance with the new regulations.<\/p>\n

The Balearic Government has thanked supermarkets, large retailers, small businesses and distributors for their cooperation in implementing the measure.<\/p>\n

Almost half of teenagers consume energy drinks<\/h2>\n

The decision comes amid growing concern over the increasing consumption of these drinks among young people.<\/p>\n

According to data from the 2023 ESTUDES survey cited by the Balearic Government, 47.7% of students aged between 14 and 18 had consumed energy drinks during the previous month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In addition, 19.5% said they had mixed them with alcohol<\/strong> during the same period.<\/p>\n

Combining the two is of particular concern because caffeine and other stimulants can reduce the subjective perception of intoxication, encourage greater alcohol consumption and increase risk-taking behaviour.<\/p>\n

Why are energy drinks banned for minors?<\/h2>\n

The Balearic Government says the measure is intended to protect the health of children and teenagers.<\/p>\n

Regular or excessive consumption of these drinks is associated with a number of health risks and may be particularly problematic among younger people.<\/p>\n

The regulations highlight risks including obesity, type 2 diabetes and an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, as well as the consequences of combining energy drinks with alcohol.<\/p>\n

With the new ban now in force, anyone under the age of 18 attempting to buy a drink classified as an energy drink in Mallorca or on any other Balearic island will be subject to the same age restriction at the point of sale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
