The Serra de Tramuntana, Platja de Palma, Santa Pon\u00e7a, Formentor, several lighthouses, viewpoints and beach access roads will be subject to closures or special traffic controls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Information updated on 4 August 2026.<\/strong> The authorities may bring forward, extend or modify the closures depending on traffic conditions, car park capacity, wildfire risk or the requirements of the emergency services. Before travelling, check the official channels of the Balearic Government, the Consell de Mallorca and the corresponding local council again.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary of the Mallorca eclipse restrictions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As a general rule, the restrictions will apply on <strong>Wednesday, 12 August 2026, between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm<\/strong> at the access points included in the ECLIPBAL operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, these times are not definitive for every area:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Closures may begin before 3:00 pm if there are traffic jams, car parks reach capacity or safety considerations make this necessary.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Platja de Palma<\/strong>, the operation will begin at 8:00 am.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Santa Pon\u00e7a<\/strong>, the operation will be activated 24 hours earlier, on Tuesday, 11 August.<\/li>\n<li>Some restrictions may remain in place after 9:00 pm.<\/li>\n<li>The measures apply to cars, vans, motorcycles and mopeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Balearic Government stresses that the operation does not involve the general closure of Mallorca. Instead, traffic will be regulated on a number of particularly sensitive roads and access routes to prevent congestion and keep emergency routes clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-157099 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dispositivo-y-cortes-eclipse-mallorca.webp\" alt=\"Mallorca eclipse traffic operation and road closures\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1066\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Do the closures also affect motorcycles and mopeds?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Yes. The latest update to the operation expressly extends the restrictions to <strong>all motor vehicles<\/strong>, with no general exemptions for motorcycles or mopeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Therefore, travelling by motorcycle will not allow motorists to pass through the controls established on the Ma-10, in Platja de Palma, Formentor, Cap Blanc, es Trenc or any of the other affected access routes. The decision was agreed jointly by the Balearic Government, the Guardia Civil, local police forces and the councils involved.<\/p>\n<h2>Roads and access routes affected in Mallorca<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">These are the roads in Mallorca currently included in the official operation. The aim is to prevent cars, motorcycles and other vehicles from gathering at viewpoints, on roadsides, near coves and on stretches of road with limited evacuation capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Monitoring of the main access points will begin before the eclipse and will be intensified during the afternoon. From 3:00 pm, or earlier if the authorities consider it necessary, only people covered by one of the authorised exemptions will be allowed to enter the restricted sections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This affects Sant Elm, Andratx, Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Esporles, Valldemossa, Dei\u00e0, S\u00f3ller, Fornalutx, Escorca, Caimari and access to Formentor, among other places. Planning an improvised route through the Serra in search of a viewpoint from which to observe the eclipse is not recommended.<\/p>\n<h2>Special operation in Platja de Palma<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Platja de Palma will be subject to different conditions from the general timetable applying across the rest of Mallorca. The municipal operation will begin at <strong>8:00 am on 12 August<\/strong> and will include restrictions on traffic and parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Exits <strong>6, 7A, 8, 11 and 12 of the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor<\/strong> are expected to be closed.<\/p>\n<h3>From 8:00 am to 12:00 noon<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">During this first phase, vehicle access will be permitted for:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Residents.<\/li>\n<li>Properly accredited workers.<\/li>\n<li>Guests of accommodation establishments with parking facilities.<\/li>\n<li>People covered by other expressly authorised exemptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Workers and guests who need to enter in a private vehicle must have the corresponding QR-code permit, processed through the establishment.<\/p>\n<h3>From 12:00 noon<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">From 12:00 noon, the vehicle closure will be extended, except for authorised exemptions. People arriving by public transport, on foot or by bicycle will not require a permit, although they must comply with the controls, safety areas and any capacity restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The operation is intended to keep access to the airport, hospitals and other essential services open. In addition, <strong>Bellver Forest will remain closed throughout the day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Restrictions in Santa Pon\u00e7a and Calvi\u00e0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Santa Pon\u00e7a beach has been selected as an Official Viewing Zone. The municipal operation will be activated <strong>24 hours before the eclipse<\/strong>, on Tuesday, 11 August, allowing traffic, parking and occupancy levels in the area to be progressively controlled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Access may be closed once maximum capacity is reached. Resident status does not provide priority entry to an Official Viewing Zone that is already full, although it can be used to justify certain journeys to a home located within a restricted area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Access to <strong>Puig de sa Morisca<\/strong> and particularly sensitive viewpoints such as <strong>El Toro and the Illes Malgrats<\/strong> will also be prohibited. Having only a booking without guaranteed parking does not ensure that access in a private vehicle will be permitted, particularly during the busiest periods.<\/p>\n<h2>Will access to hotels and restaurants be permitted?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Guests of hotels and other accommodation establishments located within a restricted area will be able to enter by presenting proof of their booking, although they should expect controls, traffic delays and possible additional conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For restaurants, beach bars and similar establishments, access in a private vehicle will be conditional on having a confirmed reservation and a guaranteed parking space. When parking is unavailable, the official recommendation is to use public transport, a taxi, a private-hire vehicle or a shuttle service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Attending a private party or celebration will not, in itself, be considered sufficient grounds for vehicle access to a closed area.<\/p>\n<h2>Will suppliers and delivery drivers be allowed to enter?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As a general rule, goods suppliers will not be allowed to enter during periods when the road is closed to traffic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In Platja de Palma, external maintenance, installation or delivery companies that need to carry out essential work will have to register as workers of the corresponding establishment. The authorities recommend postponing any work or deliveries that are not essential.<\/p>\n<h2>Will vehicles be allowed to leave a restricted area?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Yes. The restrictions mainly apply to entry. Vehicles will not generally be prohibited from leaving an affected area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, there may be traffic jams, diversions or specific instructions from officers, so visitors should not wait until the last minute to leave beaches, viewpoints or natural areas.<\/p>\n<h2>Will access on foot or by bicycle be permitted?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As a general rule, the announced closures apply to motor vehicles. Access on foot or by bicycle may remain possible, provided there is no specific prohibition, capacity limits are respected and the authorities consider that access can take place safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In Platja de Palma, it has been confirmed that people arriving on foot, by bicycle or by public transport will not require the permit required for certain private vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">However, an area may be closed completely when it reaches maximum capacity or when there is a risk to people, natural areas or the emergency services.<\/p>\n<h2>Official eclipse viewing areas in Mallorca<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-155447 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/eclipse-2026-mallorca.webp\" alt=\"2026 eclipse in Mallorca\" width=\"1200\" height=\"811\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Mallorca will have nine Official Viewing Zones distributed across seven municipalities:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Circuit de Son Matamoros.<\/li>\n<li>Platja de Palma.<\/li>\n<li>Ronda de Porreres.<\/li>\n<li>Platja de Santa Pon\u00e7a.<\/li>\n<li>Camp de futbol d\u2019Algaida.<\/li>\n<li>Camp de futbol de Pina.<\/li>\n<li>The area between Maioris and Tolleric.<\/li>\n<li>Ma-3220 car park.<\/li>\n<li>Maioris.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">These areas have not necessarily been selected because they provide the best view, but because of their accessibility, visitor capacity, parking facilities and the ability of the emergency services to intervene. Access may be closed once maximum capacity is reached.<\/p>\n<h2>Travel recommendations for 12 August<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The main recommendation is to observe the eclipse from your home, accommodation or a nearby open space, provided there is a clear view of the Sun towards the western horizon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Anyone who needs to travel should:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Check traffic conditions and official announcements before setting off.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the Serra de Tramuntana, viewpoints, lighthouses and beaches with restricted access.<\/li>\n<li>Use public transport whenever possible.<\/li>\n<li>Have the documentation required to justify access ready.<\/li>\n<li>Do not park on roadsides, tracks, emergency access routes or in unauthorised areas.<\/li>\n<li>Arrive well in advance and do not assume that entry will be possible simply because you arrive before 3:00 pm.<\/li>\n<li>Have an alternative location in mind in case your chosen destination reaches maximum capacity.<\/li>\n<li>Do not light fires, use barbecues or use any item that could cause a wildfire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The information may change up to the day of the eclipse<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The ECLIPBAL operation will be adapted according to expected visitor numbers, traffic conditions, car park capacity, weather conditions and wildfire risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Balearic Government expressly warns that additional measures may be approved on 12 August itself, controls may be brought forward or access routes that were initially open may be closed.
