The Bel\u00e9n de la Sang<\/strong> (Blood Church Nativity Scene) is on display in full<\/strong> for the first time in more than a decade<\/strong>. The Consell de Mallorca<\/strong> has completed the full restoration<\/strong> of the ensemble, considered the oldest Neapolitan-style nativity scene still in use in Europe<\/strong>. From Sunday 5 July<\/strong>, coinciding with the Dia de la Sang <\/strong>(Blood Church feast day), it can once again be visited at the esgl\u00e9sia de l\u2019Anunciaci\u00f3<\/strong> (Church of the Annunciation) in Palma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The intervention has made it possible to recover the 31 figures in the sculptural ensemble<\/strong> and return one of Mallorca\u2019s most emblematic heritage elements<\/strong> to the public. Until now, the nativity scene had remained incomplete after more than ten years without being displayed in its entirety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Work began in March 2025<\/strong> and has involved an investment of 400,000 euros<\/strong>. In addition to restoring the polychrome and gilded figures<\/strong>, the project has also acted on the chapel itself<\/strong>. Specifically, the walls have been repaired<\/strong>, the old concrete plinth<\/strong> that hindered ventilation has been removed, the cave has been reinforced<\/strong> and the space\u2019s lighting has been renewed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The intervention was carried out by the joint venture formed by Tracer Conservaci\u00f3n y Restauraci\u00f3n SL and Carlos S\u00e1nchez G\u00f3mez<\/strong>. In addition, the restoration team carried out historical and photographic studies<\/strong>, three-dimensional surveys<\/strong> of the pieces, analyses using ultraviolet light<\/strong> and various cleaning tests<\/strong> to ensure the proper conservation<\/strong> of the ensemble.<\/p>\n

The restoration of the Bel\u00e9n de la Sang<\/strong>, in two phases<\/h2>\n

The first phase of the restoration<\/strong> was presented in December 2025<\/strong>. At that time, visitors were already able to see the Baroque cave<\/strong>, the Virgin Mary<\/strong> and Saint Joseph<\/strong> -dated to around 1480<\/strong>-, the Child Jesus<\/strong> and the five Baroque angels<\/strong> bearing the inscription Gloria in excelsis Deo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the specialists completed the recovery of the remaining figures. They also restored the original gold leaf<\/strong>, the polychromy and the shine of the gilding<\/strong>, allowing the ensemble to be seen with an appearance very close to that which it had for centuries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the presentation of the restoration, the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s<\/strong>, highlighted that \u201cafter more than ten years of neglect, the nativity scene is once again restored and within reach of all Mallorcans<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

For her part, the vice-president and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Ant\u00f2nia Roca<\/strong>, underlined the ensemble\u2019s cultural and spiritual value<\/strong> and invited the public to rediscover<\/strong> one of the island\u2019s most important heritage symbols.<\/p>\n

From this Sunday, the ensemble will remain open to visitors<\/strong> so that the public can once again contemplate one of Europe\u2019s most unique historic nativity scenes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
