The German artist Katharina Grosse<\/span><\/span><\/strong> turns the Llotja de Palma<\/span><\/span><\/strong> into a large pictorial landscape<\/strong> with Arrels<\/strong><\/em>, an ambitious artistic intervention<\/strong> that can be visited from 28 May 2026<\/strong> to 31 January 2027<\/strong>. The exhibition, co-produced by the Government of the Balearic Islands<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and Es Baluard Museu d\u2019Art Contemporani<\/strong> in Palma<\/span><\/span>, offers an immersive experience<\/strong> that completely transforms one of the most emblematic Gothic buildings in Mallorca<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Curated by David Barro<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the exhibition establishes a dialogue between contemporary painting and the historic architecture<\/strong> of the Llotja. To this end, Katharina Grosse creates a landscape made up of mounds of earth and a huge tree<\/strong>, uprooted and partially buried, all covered in paint to blur the boundaries between nature, sculpture, architecture and colour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Internationally renowned for taking painting beyond the canvas<\/strong>, Grosse transforms the space into a multi-sensory experience<\/strong> in which visitors become part of the work. The artist conceives the installation as an open, enveloping environment<\/strong> that alters the perception of both the place and the viewer.<\/p>\n

An artistic intervention that redefines the Llotja de Palma<\/h2>\n

During the official presentation, the president of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens<\/span><\/span>, highlighted the international scope of the project<\/strong> and said the artist had \u201cshaken up the Llotja, transforming it into a living experience\u201d. She also recalled that more than one million people<\/strong> have visited the exhibitions held in the building since it reopened three years ago<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For her part, Katharina Grosse explained that in Arrels<\/strong><\/em> \u201cthe container and the work are completely one and the same thing<\/strong>\u201d, while David Barro defined the project as \u201ca radical relationship between painting and space<\/strong>\u201d that turns the exhibition into an environment that can be explored and inhabited.<\/p>\n

Who is Katharina Grosse?<\/h2>\n

Born in Freiburg im Breisgau<\/strong> in 1961<\/strong>, Katharina Grosse is one of the leading artists on the international contemporary scene<\/strong>. Her work has been shown at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the Centre Pompidou-Metz<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and the Hamburger Bahnhof \u2013 Museum f\u00fcr Gegenwart<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.
