According to the <em>Economic Overview of the Balearic Islands<\/em>, prepared by the Direcci\u00f3 General d&#8217;Economia i Estad\u00edstica, <strong>approved housing units<\/strong> in Mallorca <strong>increased by 152% between January and February<\/strong> compared with the same period the previous year. Across <strong>the Balearic Islands<\/strong>, <strong>1,404 approved housing units<\/strong> were recorded in the first two months of 2026, <strong>109.9% more<\/strong> than in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in approved housing units in Mallorca comes in a context of <strong>strong momentum in the construction sector in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>, consolidating the <strong>upward trend<\/strong> seen at the end of 2025. That year, <strong>4,842 approved housing units<\/strong> were recorded, <strong>29.8% more<\/strong> than in 2024 and the <strong>highest level since 2009<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154997 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Viviendas-visadas-Balears-enero-febrero-2026.webp\" alt=\"Approved housing units in Mallorca\" width=\"780\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the start of 2026, this trend intensified, partly as a result of the <strong>Law on Administrative Simplification and Rationalisation<\/strong>, which has helped to <strong>speed up procedures and reactivate residential projects<\/strong>, the Balearic Government reported in a statement.<\/p>\n<h3>Employment: record Social Security affiliation in the Balearic Islands<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>labour market<\/strong> also continues to show a <strong>positive trend<\/strong>. In March, <strong>Social Security affiliation<\/strong> in the Balearic Islands <strong>grew by 3.2%<\/strong>, reaching <strong>528,048 people<\/strong>, the <strong>highest figure on record<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The increase was recorded both in the <strong>general regime<\/strong>, with a <strong>rise of 3.4%<\/strong>, and among <strong>self-employed workers<\/strong>, who <strong>grew by 2.2%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Tourism: fewer visitors, but higher spending<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>tourism sector shows a more nuanced picture<\/strong>. During the first two months of the year, <strong>total spending rose by 2%<\/strong> to <strong>627 million euros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <strong>number of tourists fell by 7.3%<\/strong> compared with 2025, with a sharper decline among <strong>international visitors<\/strong> (<strong>-8.4%<\/strong>) than among <strong>domestic visitors<\/strong> (<strong>-5.7%<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, <strong>average spending per person<\/strong> reached <strong>1,051 euros<\/strong>, <strong>10% more<\/strong>, while <strong>daily spending<\/strong> stood at <strong>147 euros<\/strong> (<strong>+5.7%<\/strong>), pointing to a visitor profile with <strong>greater spending power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Services: recovery in activity<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>services sector<\/strong> recovered in February from the downturn recorded in January, driven by the <strong>momentum of professional and administrative activities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turnover grew by 4.4%<\/strong>, almost <strong>three times the national average<\/strong>, which stood at <strong>1.6%<\/strong> over the same period.<\/p>\n<h3>Inflation: rise due to the geopolitical context<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Price trends<\/strong> were affected by the <strong>international context<\/strong>.
