The future Palma Botanical Garden<\/strong> will have one of its main locations<\/strong> in the Parc de Ses Vies<\/strong>, following the formalisation by the Palma City Council<\/strong> and the Consell de Mallorca<\/strong> of the free transfer of use of a 13,000-square-metre publicly owned plot<\/strong> located in this strategic area of the city<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by the Mayor of Palma<\/span><\/span>, Jaime Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and will enable this space to be integrated into the development of the Palma Botanical Garden, one of the flagship projects of the current municipal term.<\/p>\n

The land, owned by the Consell de Mallorca, is located between the V\u00eda de Cintura<\/strong> (Ma-20), the Inca motorway<\/strong> (Ma-13), the Palma\u2013Manacor railway line<\/strong> and the na B\u00e1rbara stream<\/strong>. These are remnants of former road infrastructures<\/strong> that are now being incorporated into a project focused on urban renaturalisation and scientific outreach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Palma Botanical Garden<\/strong> with two complementary locations<\/h3>\n

The Palma Botanical Garden will be structured around two sites that complement each other<\/strong>. At the Parc de Ses Vies, the scientific and cultural dissemination component<\/strong> will be concentrated, featuring a representative garden<\/strong> of flora from all regions of the world with a Mediterranean climate, such as the Mediterranean Basin, California, central Chile, south-western Australia and South Africa\u2019s Western Cape.<\/p>\n

The second location will be Ses Cases des Retiro<\/strong>, a public estate situated next to the Bellver Forest<\/strong>, where the City Council has already approved a basic rehabilitation project valued at 2 million euros<\/strong>. This site is set to house a Mediterranean pine forest interpretation centre<\/strong> and to restore the historic building for public use<\/strong>, thereby strengthening the city\u2019s cultural, heritage and environmental offering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project also includes the forthcoming launch of an architectural design competition and forms part of a broader city strategy aimed at the renaturalisation of urban spaces and the promotion of green infrastructure, alongside initiatives such as the Metropolitan Forest<\/strong> and the acquisition of Son Quint<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of the most important and emblematic projects of this term<\/h3>\n

Jaime Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s stated that \u201cthis agreement is a clear example of the importance of institutional cooperation<\/strong> in advancing projects that are beneficial not only for Palma<\/strong>, but for the island as a whole<\/strong>\u201d, and noted that this transfer represents \u201ca decisive step in one of the most important, emblematic and transformative projects of this term<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

For his part, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s pointed out that it is \u201ca space that will be enjoyed by all residents of Mallorca and our visitors<\/strong>\u201d and that it \u201cenhances the city\u2019s environmental heritage<\/strong>\u201d. Galm\u00e9s added that initiatives of this kind reinforce the aim for Palma\u2019s architectural, cultural and environmental heritage to be recognised by UNESCO<\/strong>, and for the city to aspire to become European Capital of Culture in 2031<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
