{"id":152425,"date":"2026-02-04T10:26:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T09:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/descienden-defunciones-cancer-balears\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T12:58:56","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:58:56","slug":"descienden-defunciones-cancer-balears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/en\/descienden-defunciones-cancer-balears\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaths from cancer in the Balearic Islands fall as early detection improves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deaths from <strong>cancer in the Balearic Islands<\/strong> recorded a <strong>1.5% decrease<\/strong> in <strong>2024<\/strong>, according to the latest data from the Institut d&#8217;Estad\u00edstica de les Illes Balears (IBESTAT). In total, <strong>2,447 people<\/strong> died from some form of tumour (<strong>1,383 men and 1,064 women<\/strong>), a lower figure than in 2023, when <strong>2,485 deaths<\/strong> were recorded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tumours<\/strong> remain the <strong>leading cause of death in the archipelago<\/strong>, ahead of <strong>cardiovascular diseases<\/strong>. They account for <strong>27.2% of all deaths<\/strong> registered in 2024 (9,001), meaning <strong>more than one in four deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Main types of <strong>cancer in the Balearic Islands<\/strong> and mortality<\/h2>\n<p>Among <strong>women<\/strong>, the cancers with the highest mortality were <strong>lung, breast and colon<\/strong>, while among <strong>men<\/strong> the most lethal were <strong>lung, colon and prostate<\/strong> cancers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lung cancer<\/strong>: 532 deaths (361 men and 171 women).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast cancer<\/strong>: 148 deaths (146 women and 2 men).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colorectal cancer<\/strong>: 311 deaths (160 men and 151 women).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prostate cancer<\/strong>: 133 deaths, all in men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of all people who died from cancer in the Balearic Islands, <strong>56.5% were men<\/strong> and <strong>43.5% were women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Participation increases in cancer screening programmes in the <strong>Balearic Islands<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_152421\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-152421\" class=\"wp-image-152421 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Mamografia.webp\" alt=\"cancer in the Balearic Islands\" width=\"780\" height=\"542\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-152421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A woman undergoes a mammogram as part of the breast cancer early detection programme in the Balearic Islands. Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the most positive developments in the fight against <strong>cancer in the Balearic Islands<\/strong> is the significant increase in participation in early detection programmes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Colorectal cancer screening<\/strong>: in 2025, 36,326 people took part, an 18% increase on the previous year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast cancer screening<\/strong>: 32,232 women attended routine mammography checks, representing a 20% increase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, Public Health authorities are finalising the rollout of a <strong>cervical cancer early detection programme<\/strong> using vaginal cytology and testing for the <strong>human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/strong>, which is expected to be fully implemented across the Balearic Islands in the <strong>first half of the year<\/strong>. A pilot study is also under way to introduce a <strong>population-based lung cancer screening programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>More cases, but higher survival rates<\/h3>\n<p>At national level, the report <em>Las cifras del c\u00e1ncer en Espa\u00f1a 2026<\/em> by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) forecasts an increase in cancer incidence, with 301,884 new diagnoses expected in 2026, a 2% rise compared with 2025. However, survival continues to improve: five-year net survival now stands at 57.4% in men and 65.2% in women, double the figures recorded four decades ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Oncology research in the Balearic Islands<\/h3>\n<p>Research is another key pillar in tackling cancer in the Balearic Islands. The Institut d&#8217;Investigaci\u00f3 Sanitaria Illes Balears (IdISBa) has around <strong>130 researchers working across eight specialised oncology groups<\/strong>. Its main lines of work include <strong>cancer epigenetics, functional oncogenomics and research into breast cancer, colorectal cancer and haematological oncology<\/strong>, with the aim of advancing towards more precise and effective treatments.<\/p>\n<h3>Prevention and healthy lifestyles<\/h3>\n<p>To mark <strong>World Cancer Day<\/strong>, the Conselleria de Salut has highlighted the importance of <strong>maintaining healthy lifestyles and reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption<\/strong>, as well as <strong>tackling obesity and physical inactivity<\/strong>.
