Balearic Islands<\/strong> continue to rack up employment records<\/strong>. Average Social Security<\/strong> enrolment across the islands reached 491,750 people<\/strong> in January<\/strong>, the highest figure<\/strong> ever recorded for this month<\/strong>, according to the latest official data. This represents an increase of 10,882 contributors<\/strong> compared with January last year, a year-on-year rise of 2.3%<\/strong>, in line with the national average.<\/p>\n

From the Balearic Government, the Minister for Labour, Public Service and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer<\/strong>, stressed that these figures confirm a structural shift in the archipelago\u2019s labour market<\/strong>. \u201cWe are creating jobs even during the winter months, which allows us to say that de-seasonalisation is no longer just an objective, but a reality,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Compared with December<\/strong>, enrolment fell by 8,560 people<\/strong> (-1.7%), a similar trend to Spain as a whole<\/strong>, where the drop was 1.2%.<\/p>\n

By scheme, the self-employed<\/strong> category totals 100,987 contributors<\/strong>, representing 20.5% of the total. This group grew by 2.3% year-on-year<\/strong>, with 2,233 more people<\/strong> than a year ago, although it recorded a monthly decline of 837 contributors<\/strong> (-0.8%). The remaining schemes account for 390,763 enrolments<\/strong>, with the same 2.3% annual increase and a monthly fall of 1.9%.<\/p>\n

Unemployment falls by 5.1% over the year<\/h2>\n

The number of unemployed people<\/strong> stood at 28,045<\/strong> in January, meaning 1,515 fewer jobseekers<\/strong> than a year ago (-5.1%). The administrative unemployment rate<\/strong> fell to 5.4%<\/strong>, four tenths lower than in January 2025.<\/p>\n

On a monthly<\/strong> basis, unemployment fell by 1,260 people<\/strong> (-4.3%) compared with December, while in Spain overall it rose by 1.3%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Uneven trend by island<\/h3>\n

By island, year-on-year unemployment fell<\/strong> in Mallorca<\/strong> (-5.8%), Menorca<\/strong> (-5.9%) and Formentera<\/strong> (-1.7%), while Ibiza<\/strong> was the only island to record an increase<\/strong>, up 1.8%.<\/p>\n

Compared with the previous month, unemployment fell across all islands<\/strong>, most notably in Formentera<\/strong> (-16.1%), followed by Ibiza<\/strong> (-5.3%), Mallorca<\/strong> (-4.2%) and Menorca<\/strong> (-3.0%).<\/p>\n

Women and over-25s lead the decline<\/h3>\n

By group<\/strong>, unemployment fell most among women<\/strong> (-5.5%), people aged over 25<\/strong> (-6.2%) and Spanish nationals<\/strong> (-6.4%). By contrast, it rose among under-25s<\/strong>, up 2.6%.<\/p>\n

By economic sector<\/strong>, unemployment fell in all sectors except agriculture<\/strong> (+1.1%), with the sharpest drops in construction<\/strong> (-12.2%) and among people with no previous employment<\/strong> (-6.4%).<\/p>\n

Migration debate<\/h3>\n

In the context of the debate over the regularisation of migrants<\/strong>, the minister underlined that the Balearic Government\u2019s policy focuses on improving employability for groups facing the greatest barriers to entering the labour market<\/strong>, especially people aged over 45<\/strong> and the long-term unemployed<\/strong>, a group that has shrunk by 7% over the past year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
