The Ajuntament de Palma<\/span><\/span><\/strong> has decided to cancel all official events of the Sant Sebasti\u00e0 festivities<\/strong> as a sign of mourning, respect and solidarity with the victims of the serious railway accident that occurred in Adamuz (C\u00f3rdoba)<\/strong>. The measure affects both the events scheduled for this Monday and those planned for Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken following the tragedy that occurred on Sunday in Adamuz<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, which left dozens of fatalities and more than a hundred people injured, and aims to express institutional support for the affected families and the emergency teams who continue to work in the area.<\/p>\n

Revetla de Sant Sebasti\u00e0 and main festive events suspended<\/h2>\n

All events of the Revetla de Sant Sebasti\u00e0<\/strong> scheduled for this Monday, 19 January, have been suspended<\/strong>, including the lighting of the bonfire in Pla\u00e7a Major<\/strong>, the traditional popular revetla and the concerts planned in Pla\u00e7a d\u2019Espanya, Pla\u00e7a de Cort, Pla\u00e7a de Joan Carles I and Pla\u00e7a Major<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the City Council has indicated that it recommends that organisers of non-official activities<\/strong> suspend the remaining celebrations as a sign of respect and solidarity with the victims of the accident.<\/p>\n

Diada Ciclista and Premis Ciutat de Palma cancelled<\/h2>\n

The Diada Ciclista and the Premis Ciutat de Palma awards ceremony<\/strong>, scheduled for this Tuesday, 20 January, have also been cancelled. In the case of the awards, the Ajuntament has announced that it will soon organise an institutional event in the Plenary Hall<\/strong> to present the distinctions to the award recipients.<\/p>\n

For their part, neither the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, nor the members of the municipal government will attend the religious celebrations planned at La Seu Cathedral and the Church of Sant Sebasti\u00e0 in honour of the city\u2019s patron saint.<\/p>\n

As a sign of official mourning, the flags of the Ajuntament de Palma are flying at half-mast<\/strong> from 12:00 today until 00:00 on 23 January.<\/p>\n

Minute of silence by the Balearic Government<\/h2>\n

The President of the Govern de les Illes Balears<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Margalida Prohens<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, took part this Monday in a minute of silence at the Consolat de Mar<\/strong>, accompanied by members of the regional government, in memory of the victims, the injured and the families affected by the accident.<\/p>\n

After the event, Prohens stressed that the gesture seeks to express \u201cthis sign of mourning and to join in the pain that is currently moving the whole of Spain\u201d, remembering the fatalities and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. The President also thanked the security forces and emergency services, as well as healthcare professionals, for their efforts.<\/p>\n

Prohens, who has suspended her institutional agenda<\/strong>, also contacted the President of the Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, to place herself at his disposal for any needs arising from the tragedy.<\/p>\n

Among those attending the minute of silence were, among other authorities, the Mayor of Palma, the President of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands and the President of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
