The Balearic Government<\/strong> has released 34 loggerhead sea turtles<\/strong> (Caretta caretta<\/em>) born this summer on Can Pere Antoni beach<\/strong> in Palma<\/strong>. The release took place yesterday at 5:00 p.m. at the same spot where the nest was found last July.<\/p>\n

The nest contained 77 eggs<\/strong>, of which 63 hatchlings successfully emerged<\/strong> between 6 and 7 September. Ten eggs<\/strong> were moved to an incubator to ensure their viability.<\/p>\n

Of these hatchlings, 39 individuals<\/strong> were included in the \u201cHead Starting\u201d 2025\u20132026<\/strong> programme, led by the Consorci per a la Recuperaci\u00f3 de la Fauna de les Illes Balears<\/strong> (COFIB). This project, developed in collaboration with other autonomous communities, raises the turtles for almost a year in a controlled environment to increase their chances of survival and study the early stages of their life. The animals have been distributed among the Marine Research and Aquaculture Laboratory<\/strong> (LIMIA) in Port d\u2019Andratx, the Marine Animal Recovery Centre<\/strong> (CRAM) in Catalonia, the Palma Aquarium Foundation<\/strong>, the Visitor Centre of Cabrera National Park<\/strong>, and the aquariums of Seville and Gij\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 34 remaining turtles<\/strong>, now fully developed, returned yesterday to their natural habitat at Can Pere Antoni, in a public event that brought together many institutions and local residents.<\/p>\n

Coordinated work between administrations, research centres and conservation organisations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Director General of Natural Environment and Forest Management, Anna Torres<\/strong>, stated during the release that \u201cthis type of action demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated work between administrations, research centres and conservation organisations<\/strong>, and confirms that the Balearic Islands have a well-established response system<\/strong> for new nesting cases.\u201d Torres also highlighted that \u201cthe consolidation of these protocols allows not only to improve the reproductive success of the species, but also to obtain essential scientific information<\/strong> about its biology and adaptation to the western Mediterranean<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Torres, the event was attended by the Director General of Environment of Palma City Council, Sebasti\u00e0 Pujol<\/strong>, along with representatives from COFIB<\/strong>, the Palma Aquarium Foundation<\/strong>, LIMIA<\/strong>, the Natura Parc Foundation<\/strong> and numerous volunteers<\/strong> who helped monitor and guard the nest.<\/p>\n

The sea turtle, a vulnerable species<\/h3>\n

The loggerhead sea turtle<\/strong> (Caretta caretta<\/em>) is listed as a vulnerable species<\/strong> in the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species. Although its reproduction is common in the eastern Mediterranean, since the early 21st century nests have also been recorded in the western Mediterranean<\/strong>, a phenomenon linked to the increase in sea temperature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
