Cases of stroke<\/strong> attended by SAMU 061<\/strong> between January and September<\/strong> this year have increased by 23%<\/strong> compared to the same period last year. In total, 767 stroke codes<\/strong> were activated, compared to 624 recorded in 2024<\/strong>. The increase is part of an analysis carried out by SAMU 061 Illes Balears<\/strong>, which aims to improve care planning<\/strong> and early detection<\/strong> of the disease.<\/p>\n

Cardiovascular disease<\/strong> remains the leading cause of death<\/strong> and one of the main causes of disability<\/strong>. The Stroke Code<\/strong> brings together the prehospital and hospital<\/strong> services that are activated when a person suffers an acute stroke. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year<\/strong>, ensuring care for patients with an acute cerebrovascular accident<\/strong> throughout the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Patient profile<\/h2>\n

84% of cases<\/strong> involve people aged between 40 and 75<\/strong>, and 57% are men<\/strong>. The study highlights a steady increase in strokes among people over 60, linked to risk factors such as high blood pressure<\/strong>, sedentary lifestyle<\/strong> and tobacco use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mallorca records the majority of cases<\/h3>\n

79% of cases<\/strong> occurred in Mallorca<\/strong>, 13% in Ibiza<\/strong>, 7% in Menorca<\/strong> and 1% in Formentera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The highest incidence rates were recorded in municipalities with high population density<\/strong> such as Palma, Manacor, Inca, Calvi\u00e0, Llucmajor and Marratx\u00ed<\/strong>. Areas with a high seasonal population<\/strong> also stand out, such as Alc\u00fadia, Capdepera, Ibiza and Santany\u00ed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Reference hospitals<\/h3>\n

67% of patients<\/strong> were transferred to the Son Espases University Hospital<\/strong>, 12% to Son Ll\u00e0tzer University Hospital<\/strong> and 8% to Can Misses Hospital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The average response time<\/strong> from the emergency call to arrival at the hospital is 59 minutes<\/strong>, consolidating SAMU 061<\/strong> as a key player in reducing brain ischaemia time<\/strong>, a decisive factor in stroke recovery. The service works in close coordination with reference hospitals and remains committed to continuous training<\/strong>, early telephone detection<\/strong> and on-site patient stabilisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
