The Consell de Mallorca<\/strong> has approved a project to improve road safety and reduce illegal racing and excessive noise in the Serra de Tramuntana<\/strong>. The plan includes the installation of 64 monitoring cameras<\/strong> and 20 sound level meters<\/strong> on the area\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n

The project, promoted by the Department of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure<\/strong>, will be extended to the whole island. In total, 210 radar and video surveillance devices<\/strong> will be installed at different locations across Mallorca.<\/p>\n

The investment amounts to \u20ac1.2 million<\/strong> and includes the purchase and installation of 105 speed and vehicle-counting units<\/strong>, 105 surveillance cameras<\/strong> and 20 sound level meters<\/strong>. In the Serra de Tramuntana there will be 32 monitored zones<\/strong>, and the system is expected to be operational by the end of 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Control points in Mallorca to be doubled<\/h2>\n

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT)<\/strong> had to certify the cameras<\/strong> before installation, which caused a delay in the project\u2019s approval<\/strong>. This certification is required in order to use the images for imposing fines<\/strong>, since sanctioning authority lies with the DGT. Once the system becomes operational, the Consell<\/strong> will hand over the recordings to this body.<\/p>\n

With this initiative, the number of control points will be doubled<\/strong> on Mallorca\u2019s road network. The 53 existing ones will be joined by 52 new points<\/strong>. In addition, all old cameras will be replaced<\/strong>, which until now could only count vehicles. The new equipment will be able to distinguish between vehicle types<\/strong> and even detect bicycles<\/strong>, allowing for more accurate traffic data.<\/p>\n

Initially, the project envisaged around 30 cameras in the Serra. However, it was expanded following requests from the Balearic Government<\/strong>, the Guardia Civil <\/strong> and several municipal councils<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
